I think the Brad Marsh/Nik Grossmann type of dman was really hurt by the crackdown on obstruction. Not being allowed to hold guys up and mug em in the corners greatly hurts their game.
- BiggE

Certainly

I think these guys still have a role to play, but they likely need a very good skating partner to play with.

How about deal length?
Has Raffl gotten to the point where they give him a 3 year deal?
Erik Gustafsson another 1 year deal?

B Schenn is the most interesting I think.
I'd be in favor of a 2 year bridge thing like Couts got, but he might get longer.

- Marc D

No need to give multi-year deals to Raffl or Gus unless they want to. I think we still need to see more from Gus to consider a 2 year deal. He's playing well now, but he has been injury prone. I would consider one with Raffl, but it's a bit of an unnecessary risk.

I would give Schenn a bridge deal as well.

Have you even watched him play lately?

He is nothing more than a 3rd line grinder anymore.

A time machine.

But for the next six years I'd much rather have BSchenn and Simmonds.

He's still a good passer. I'd say he's still a 2nd line player. Barely though. Flyers don't really need him as they have too many center already.

What kind of dollars for Schenn?

Without his bonus, which was never achievable, his base salary on the entry level deal is only 900,000 I think.

Kadri and Stepan got 2 years, ~3m AAV after scoring at a 75 point pace last season. Holmgren should offer him no more than that since Schenn has no leverage. This will be Schenn's first full season so I don't think locking him up to a four-six year deal like JVR, Voracek and Simmonds make sense.

That article is exactly what you've been railing against... hand-picking individual stats, while ignoring/glossing over others, to reach the desired conclusion.

Is it any wonder that Murray turned out to be a poor addition, so much so that he was let go, couldn't find a job until late August, and has been an all-out disaster for the Habs?

The original critics were proven right... Murray's weaknesses far outweighed his benefits... and he couldn't help the Pens, even in a limited role.

- Tomahawk

Again that lacks context. The author was simply showing how one stat that most were using to criticize the deal, shouldn't be used in the case of that type of player. The Pens didn't take him on as a long term addition, they took him on for a playoff run to add the qualities that the author mentions to their lineup. The point of the article was all about how context needs to be taken into account when using analytics such as Corsi.
And what proof is there that Murray did or didn't help the Pens? And the article wasn't about whether it was a good or bad move in hindsight, nor did it have anything to do with Murray with the Habs. It was simply to illustrate the importance of context when using analytics, and it was one example.

Probably around 2yrs $4M

Couts got 2yrs $3.5M last offseason. Couts is better than Schenn but I'm taking into account strictly numbers and inflation of the cap for next season.

I think Gus gets a 2 year deal at like 3 mil, 1.5 AAV

I think Schenn gets 3 years 9 mil, 3 AAV

I think Mez gets 1 year at 1.5 mil

Just because the word context was used in the article, doesn't mean any context was actually provided, or any meaningful conclusions were reached. It was a really poorly thought out, hastily researched piece, and it shows.

I don't know if Schenn gets almost twice as much as Couturier. Im thinking more in terms of 3 years 6 million.

I think Mez will be playing elsewhere.

But if he would really take 1 yr at 1.5M I wouldn't mind him back a bit.

That's a matter of opinion. And in my opinion the author used an excellent example to explain the need for context when using analytics. I've got plenty of other reference articles concerning analytics and how they need to be used in the correct context.

I don't really want Mez back. I don't think he wants to come back as a 7th defenseman either. Some team will give him a better opportunity.
