This is exactly what I hate about these numbers. What you did there was pull the numbers you needed to show that Grossmann is not a great outlet passer, and thus you think you won the arguement that Grossmann sucks. What you fail to see, and what the other person is able to see, is maybe there is more to being a defenseman then moving the puck out of the zone. Maybe he does a good job keeping a player to the outside on shots. maybe he blocks a ton of shots... Maybe he does throw hits and knock players off the puck. Maybe he clears the front of the net very well. Just because he isnt a great outlet passer does not mean he is a "problem" It MEANS that the coach has to take into account his weakness and put someone that compliments him with him.

Rosehill got extended?
- youarewrong

The 2-year extension he got after we traded Z for him.

What's Rosehill's CORSI number compared to everyone else? If it's better than anyone...well, that would be odd.

Anthony Gargano can eat a bag of d's.

WaWa iced tea is delicious.

Any of these topics?

Guessing it's a tribute to the greatest criminal in Flyers' history. And no, I'm not referring to Billy Tibbets.

Here's a good read. Just insert Grossmann in place of Murray.

Doug Murray? Yeah, great trade in hindsight.

Does anyone else find it odd that MJL is arguing agaisnt numbers and Tomahawk is argueing for?

That would be like me arguing for increased minimum wage while Tomahawk argues against....

The point is clear in the article. Which is explaining how important context is when using analytics.

true. but my point is that while i admit i dont have the stats in front of me to look it up, it sure as hell felt like the majority of his homeruns would occur with the team either up or down by enough for it to be inconsequential.
- stayinthefnnet

That's like the idiots who said Mike Schmidt's home runs never mattered or most of Lindros's goals came with an empty net.

That article is exactly what you've been railing against... hand-picking individual stats, while ignoring/glossing over others, to reach the desired conclusion.

Is it any wonder that Murray turned out to be a poor addition, so much so that he was let go, couldn't find a job until late August, and has been an all-out disaster for the Habs?

The original critics were proven right... Murray's weaknesses far outweighed his benefits... and he couldn't help the Pens, even in a limited role.

Something I have been thinking about since the "Grossmann Wars of 2014" started is that I wonder if the concept of a "defensive defenseman" is reaching obsolescence in light of teams embracing possession oriented statistics to build their teams.

Anachronism is probably more accurate -- like the heavy-weight enforcer, it's becoming a relic of hockey tradition.

Changing topics for a minute,

What is the expected time table for the Flyers to get new deals for the 3 RFAs?

Brayden Schenn
Gustafsson
Raffl

I am assuming (hoping) all 3 will be re-signed.

Is it likely to happen in the summer after the season is over or during the season?

The UFA situation is much more difficult and I'm not which if any of them will be back.

I heard Schenns people had preliminary discussions with Homer last summer and they both agreed to put it off until the season ended.

I see all of them getting signed in due time. Flyers aren't the type to be penny pinchers.

I think the Brad Marsh/Nik Grossmann type of dman was really hurt by the crackdown on obstruction. Not being allowed to hold guys up and mug em in the corners greatly hurts their game.

I think it will be in the summer after the season. Really, the Flyers just need them taken care of before free agency starts so they know exactly how much money they have to spend.

How about deal length?
Has Raffl gotten to the point where they give him a 3 year deal?
Erik Gustafsson another 1 year deal?

B Schenn is the most interesting I think.
I'd be in favor of a 2 year bridge thing like Couts got, but he might get longer.
