I have a different take on this. I'll preface by saying I could actually be callahans biggest fan. Lol. (And i really havent seen this said) But I say this about most athletes so its not bias. But if I'm Callahan I'd be demanding the same thing. He sees what these players get...it's the owners fault anyway. He's got one big contract his whole life coming to him..he's worked his whole life to get it. That time is now..He's taking way to much heat on these blogs in my opinion. He's not the bad guy in this. Alot of venom thrown his way. Anyone that says anything negative about cally right now should put themselves in his skates. He's done alot for this org and he feels the same way...rightfully.
People saying sh!t like "good riddance"? (Not here) Gimme a break
Edit: I donot think he deserves what he's asking...but that's a completely different argument - Slimtj100
TJ, I think that it is certainly right for him to make the decision that he thinks is best for him and his family. He's earned the right to make the choice, but his choice will also likely have consequences, meaning he won't be a Ranger anymore. And lets be honest, there is probably only one team that will pay him the money that has been rumored. And if he goes to that team, he might not want to get used to playing hockey past April for a few years (or at least until all if their soon to be Top 5 picks begin to mature).

Lost in all this trade talk is that it seems like every team around us is winning. So, despite the Rangers excellent play, they can't create any comfort in the standings. The East doesn't suck anymore, and just making the playoffs will be an accomplishment. |

yep, Philly seems to be getting on a roll, Rangers 1 point out of falling out of playoff spot.
Imagine we weren't on this roll we've been on. The Islanders are 12 points out with 25 games to play, we could very well be down there. |

You shouldnt get a point for losing, Its absouleutly madding. - TrueBlue9182
Point system should be:
2 points - for winning in regulation or OT
1 point - for winning in a shootout
0 points - for losing at any point of the game (regulation, OT, shootout)

I understand that 5.5 million in NYC is not the same in lets say Dallas but Cally has to realize his potential for endorsements in NY is unmatched. Being the captain of a winning team in NY could = $$$$. Enough already sign for 5.5 million win and go do some commercials make some cash and we're all happy.
But seriously if he is asking for north of 6 million than let him go. |

Rather than bringing another player in for Callahan, would you be OK with STL first and another draft pick if freeing up the money that Callahan leaves behind means giving Girardi a little closer to what he wants? Again, I suck as a GM, but throwing this out there, not sure if that enough for me bc I don't know if JT Miller can get the job done and I don't want to give this season away... |

Pete, I've was off the hockey grid for a little while, what is the update on the rumors regarding Callahan and Girardi? - OLDSCHOOL#6
Basically, Jan summarizes all the latest in his blog. The real short version is that the rumors are Callahan wants close to $7 million a year long term, and that the Girardi deal might not be as close as originally thought. They are still hopeful that they can get a deal done with Girardi this week, but they same level of optimism isn't there. If they can't get a deal done this week, the insiders believe that that may signal that Girardi wants to test the market, and the Rangers might have to reasses. Not a good night of rumors at all.
I am sure that you saw this above, but Carp also made an interesting comment in the comment section of his blog, that Callahan played a significant role in the Torts' rebellion, and that Hank may have had less of a role than originally thought. I really don't think that means much for the present issue, but I found it interesting nonetheless. Even if true, he ain't the first Captain to play a significant role in getting the coach fired.

Personally, whether its in the Callahan deal, or part of another deal, I think the Rangers need to bring in an NHL ready player to replace Callahan this year. The team is playing good hockey right now, and they need to do all they can to maintain their momentum if they decide to move Callahan. I'm a JT Miller fan, but I am not convinced that he's ready to take on the role that the Rangers will need to compensate for Callahan's loss. I think that he will be able to do that next year (to a certain extent), but not right now.
Also, St. Louis's pick is likely to be in the bottom of the draft in relatively weak year, so I don't think that would be a great return. |

Oh, the Girardi business is somewhat new. It sort of proves my point, we can't listen to what these guys in the media are saying about the contract demands and offers.
I'm not surprised to hear Callahan was more a force in the Torts uprising. The captain is the voice of the team, players will tell him how they feel about all situations. They even call or text at all hours of the day if something is wrong, or if there is a family issue. |

IMO, no matter the return, if you lose Girardi and Cally this year the entire heart of the team is gone and this season we are done. Which sucks with the run we are on. |

I think Girardi gets done. I have no idea about Callahan. Yesterday, before the rumors of the $7 million demand, my gut was telling me that something would get worked out. Now, however, I am just not sure that the Rangers can make it happen with Callahan, and they may have to decide whether the return they could get for him as worth more than having him as basically a rental for the rest of the season.

No, I'm serious. Obviously taking the salary cap into accoubt it makes a Vanek deal unlikely but in terms of him not being something the Rangers need, that's just not true. He'll finish the year with close 275-280 career goals and will be the best forward on the UFA market. |

You have to let his agent talk to the teams. If he comes with an extension I think we get can possibly get a boatload. |

I'm really disappointed in Cally and Girardi, so much for hometown discounts and loyalty, I still think there's a better chance that Girardi gets resigned but Cally can go enjoy a major rebuild in the middle of his career in Buffalo |
