They're gonna throw Crosby/OV money at him. He's going nowhere. The Islanders will trade every other player on the roster to retain him. - jmatchett383
just like 29 other teams in the league will throw the exact same money. the only advantage the islanders have is the 8th extra year they can offer, but that extra year will probably be more like a prison sentence than a perk for JT. |

We have won and lost our share with Vanek there....him signing doesn't change this team.....Nelson can replace him on that line (not same skill (yet) but he works harder...what we need is a goalie, forward (then get rid of Bailey) and a defenseman. If Vanek can get us any of those spots him leaving helps the team.... |

I'd trade him for a goaltender of the future like a John Gibson and call up Strome, pair him with JT and go from there |

Wang could have stepped in to replace the GM. Owner always has to take more heat since the Owner does not report to the GM. - ses111

That's fine. Still hurts for another big time player turning down a huge deal. - ses111
but the vanek deal still cant be considered a bust if it isnt complete...it was a risk people were willing to take, now that it seems like vanek wont resign, let the rest of the story play out. |

From what I've seen from Vanek as an Islander, I like him, but he is not worth 8 million for 8 years - NYI44
Ouch...sorry to hear this Isle fans...although not completely unexpected.
I really liked Vanek in his time with the Sabres but he wasn't even worth the ~7 million/yr deal he signed back in 2007...and he certainly isn't worth 8. Atleast the Isle's should get something decent back in trading him at the deadline...although you can't really trust your GM to make smart decisions right. |

Didn't Streit leave too? - JVince11
Streit and Blake were offered waaaay too much money for waaaay too long. The isles did not come close to matching that.. which was the right move.
I'll concede Smyth even though he got the same $ the isles offered for 10 years.. from Colorodo in 6 years. ... regardless it was a good miss and the "gave up waaay too much" idiots were wrong as Nillson and O'mara both stunk. |

it'll be hard to trade a guy who is showing how stubborn he is.. maybe he just wants to go to a powerhouse team and then he would resign.. maybe his sights are ONLY set on MIN...
he WILL NOT get a 7+M deal from a contender though... i promise that. |

Strome hurt in AHL other day... so glad we sent him down so he could play during the olympic break. |

There's no way the Islanders allow him to reach UFA, and if he gets tendered an offer sheet as a RFA, they'll match. He's going nowhere. |

that sucks man......the level of GM incompetence in the last 15 years has been awful.
at least snow isn't as dumb as milbury............he probably would have traded tavares and reinhardt for Heatley |

Bone to pick: I watch Vanek a lot. all the same reasons you HATED Moulson Vanek has those exact same traits. I would even say worse b/c Moulson was terrible in his own end but actually tried. Vanek gets to Blue line and stops like he has a dog collar on... He is incredibly talented, but I don't see the effort quite often.
Snow should move him today... but he won't. |

I'm not going to call it a bust yet. I hope the team gets a good return. Isles need NHL ready players. It's very fustrating for the Isles to continue to strike out with top talent. These things should no longer be happening. It feels like we are still fighting the old Islander perceptions. Making the playoffs last year seem to do little to change things. |

I bet he would take a 6 yr/36M deal from a team like ANA, CHI (if they buyout Hossa), DET, LA, MIN, Pitt, SJS, or WSH. |

Well let's hope the Islanders can get back what they paid to get Vanek? Moulson & a 1st & 2nd with the right to push the 1st to next season if it's a top 10 pick this season, which obviously it will be.
I didn't like this deal when the Islanders made it & I'm liking it significantly less now but I will reserve judgement fully until Snow trades Vanek to see how the dust settles.
I have concerns that no 1 will pay the price the Islanders paid for a rental & why would Minny move assets now to get a player they know they can most likely have for nothing more than money come July 1st.
A very similiar scenario to Hamhuis. Philly gambled & lost. Hamhuis wanted to play in Vancouver & took a discount to do so. |
