With the exception of one month, Grossmann is reliable. Mez is totally unreliable. You never know what the hell he's going to do. He's, also, unwilling to be physical.

Coaches prefer having a known commodity. Grossmann has worked up a strong body of work that suggests January was just a bump in the road. Mez has been injured and unreliable this season.

- PhillySportsGuy

Except he isn't reliable. You keep saying that, but the numbers do not back it up. the only number you have used is +/-.

It's great that Grossmann is willing to be physical. It'd be better if he was willing to not force dumb passes and avoid running around on defense and blowing coverages.

So who do you want to play instead of him? Gill? Mez? Gervais? Lauridson? Kukkanen?

I think Alt is the best skater out of that group. Grossmann would be great on a Western team team like the Kings that the refs let commit holding and interference all game long.

Grossmann is a grossly overrated and terribly defensemann.

Has there been any analysis of Grossmann's numbers with different forward groups on the ice?

I've only seen Grossmann's numbers with other d-men and the numbers are not flattering.

- johndewar

BSH did a chart, and specifically mentioned Couturier's numbers in the article posted yesterday. I'm trying to locate the chart, but I'm having issues.

I'm basing it off of past performance before January.

But seriously, the poop they got away with on Saturday made me think it was an NHL game from two lockouts ago.

The thing is, he hasn't played well for the entirety of this season, January was a dip from subpar to Godawful. It's not like he went from being really solid to subpar.

And it was probably the most entertaining game of the year. Ducks was probably 2nd.

I thought the Ducks game was an outstanding game. I thought the Flyers were going to get at least a point in that game up until the SHG. That was just a killer.

I liked the team's fight in that game. They came out hard and could have won if they caught some better breaks.

Grossmann's size only comes into play because the team is constantly hemmed in their own zone when he's out on the ice. It would be addition by subtraction if they could unload him and his contract, imo.

I think Hainsey could fill Grossmann's minutes 5-on-5 and on the PK and the team would be better for it.

- bradleyc4

If size only came into play because a team is constantly heemed in their own end. Teams like LA wouldn't want players like Mitchell, Greene, and Regehr in their lineup.

Any player is available given the right offer. You really want to overpay for a rental player?
- PhillySportsGuy

How is daley a rental player?

Trevor Daley 3 more years at 3.3 million. Read and Gus get that done?

I believe there are justified reasons as to why Grossmann is a whipping boy. I'm not saying that Grossmann isn't an NHL defender, I believe that the team is asking him to do too much, and it's hurting them.

Personally, I think Luke Schenn fills the role nicely. But I see that role as top PK unit/3rd pairing at even-strength. The Flyers lack of legit top-4 defensemen has thrust Grossmann into a role he's not suited for.

- bradleyc4

Grossmann is a legitimate top 4 defenseman in the NHL.

I wonder if their lack of offense has anything to do with having guys like Mitchell, Greene and Regehr in their lineup.

I don't ever recall saying Meszaros has played well. I recall saying that Meszaros gets benched for poor play, while Grossmann has not been.

If your point is, well Grossmann has played bad, but so has Meszaros, so Grossmann should play because he was more solid last season really doesn't make sense in the context of the conversation.

Neither has played well this season, and for both it's been a season long issue of inconsistency. The same goes for Luke Schenn and Erik Gustafsson. My issue is, why is it OK to sit Schenn or Gustafsson or Meszaros for a bad game, when Grossmann stays in the line up?

I really think you're exaggerating a bit on his poor defensive play. He had a terrible month of January. He was -10 for the month. He's -11 for the season.
- PhillySportsGuy

I agree. All you have to do is watch the highlights and game film that's available to know how well Grossmann has played this year. He most certainly had a bad stretch of games in January. And he deserves criticism for that. But overall he remains a solid defensive defenseman.

Good thing we didn't trade for the 14 year rental of Shea Weber.
