thats reasonable by this new standard. i could definitely see him getting more though, especially if girardi resigns. its abysmal, who else besides Niskanen is really going to garner much attention at all?
i think between the three, id prefer girardi, then niskanen, then carle.
i dont think so. only because i just dont think they can. and honestly, i dont think ill hold it against him when he leaves, because for him to resign it pittsburgh, he would have to turn down a ton of extra money. like max talbot times 5. - stayinthefnnet
Looking at the Pens cap picture on capgeek, it looks to me like they can if they choose to.
Max deal was a fair deal in hindsight. The cap keeps going up so much. These deals end up not being that bad after a few years.
Carles deal looked terrible and now it look reasonable. - PhillySportsGuy
true. but banking on the cap to go up by leaps and bounds is a game that im not necessarily willing to play. its great if it can bail you out, but it can burn you in a hurry. but yeah, i understand. martins deal as little as a year and a half ago was something that supposedly couldnt be given away, and now its pretty good.

i hate him, but Subban is another one of those guys who would single handedly improve the flyers by leaps and bounds. he is the real deal. - stayinthefnnet
He would make any team better. He's toned down his antics a bit. The playoffs last year were pretty embarrassing for the Habs as a whole. Subban was definitely part of that.

I agree, which is why I look at deals that the Flyers have made that some say are bad deals such as the Hartnell and Lecavalier deals. In a couple of Seasons, Lecavalier's 4.5M cap hit would be equal to a comparable 2.5M cap hit today.

Without Girardi, he'd be the only longterm candidate. Guys like Markov, Timonen and Boyle would attract attention too. They may get more on a per year basis.

I believe expansion will bring in 2 new teams, I believe. Personally, I think the cap will be above $80 million within 4 years. This cap adjustment for this year was a farce.

I don't think that there is any doubt that the Salary cap is going to continue to climb up and up. Until the next lockout, that is.

you think? i dont have the numbers in from of me, but it seems like things are going to get tight. malkins raise is pretty scant, but letang more than doubles. a decision will have to be made on orpik as well. lets just say for arguments sake, niskanen gets 5.25 per year over 6 years. even if they can mathematically make it work, it might be a perilous deal for them to enter into with the cap/personnel makeup of the team.
i also echo some of the concerns here as to his level of play. i do think he has turned a corner, and can be a quality top 4 defenseman. but i do think his current numbers are not something that will be sustained long term.

A lot of that has to do with Martin's play as well.
The cap will keep going up. NHL just signed an enormous deal. It also forces the poorer teams to pay up in order to reach the cap floor. That's why players are getting huge deals. The bidding war isn't only among the big market teams.

Definitely going to be tight, but they have over 15M to play with. A lot will depend on what an RFA like Sutter is going to get. And maybe an older player like Orpik takes a comparable deal to what he has now.
With the scarcity of available all around defenseman , I'd think long and hard about it.

I have concerns with Niskanen. Girardi is the more stable guy. Thats why I like him more.
Niskanen has bust potential if he goes to a team and is asked to do too much. I feel he'd continue to play well with the Pens. He wouldn't be asked to anchor the blue line. He would be relied on heavily in Philadelphia though.
