No but Norris caliber defensemen are not available by trade or thru free agency this year. Is Edler better than MacDonald or Stralman or Streit on the 1st pair?
- psuhockey

Bryzgalov was technically better than Nabokov, Vokoun, etc too.

'Settling' has gotten them into a lot of trouble over the years... I'm not trading A+ assets for anything short of an A+ fit. If that player isn't out there, than I'm perfectly happy tinkering while waiting for the cavalry of kids to arrive.

I'm sorry, but I'm just not a fan of advanced stats. It seems like stats in a vacuum. To me, each individual play has to be judged on its own merit. That goes for all stats as well. That's very simple and now I see it, and just wanted to put it out there. So I will not offer statistical data, and will instead use my personal observations and feelings in as unbiased a manner as I can when evaluating a player.

It always has been and always will be the best way to assess a players play.

Cousin, why use a spoon, why not use a knife?
- jmatchett383

the spoon was not an oversight. i realize no one likes to accept what things cost. im definitely guilty of that when it comes to contracts. but trades for an established dman, hell even one who is young with potential, are costly. two seconds gets you a rental doug murray, not alex edler.

because you guys spoon your eyes out when you see the price for a rounded one typically. so like he says, its either take someone not so solidly balanced, or try and hit on a younger kid not getting a shot.

That's really my main issue with Grossmann. I don't see such a huge gap between him and Meszaros, Gustafsson & Schenn to justify them getting benched after a bad game and Grossmann not.

It's not an argument for long term benchings, it's simply saying that Grossmann isn't an elite level player that is so much better than other that they can't survive his absence

- Jsaquella

The problem there is that Meszaros and Gustafsson haven't played in the same situations as Grossmann has. Let's put them there and see how they do. Stating that they can't survive his absence isn't a reasonable reason for benching a player. I don't personally feel that Grossmann deserves to be benched. I think he deserves to play his way through his recent struggles. I think he's earned that. I don't think Gustaffsson or Schenn has earned that leeway. And Meszaros is simply not in the future of this team it seems. And Meszaros besides his recent offensive hot streak, clearly hasn't gotten back to where he was in the past.

While true, Diaz would probably be at least a 6/7 on this team. For a player like Weise, not a bad pick up.
- jmatchett383

pretty sure we have enough 6/7 defenseman

There's nothing to interpret.

The Flyers have a shot attempt deficit of 2.5 to 1 against when Grossmann is on the ice. There's no interpretation on that, it's worse than anyone on the team. Again, not an interpretation.

Also, when every other player on the team has worse possession number with Grossmann than without, it's not an interpretation. It's simply a fact that the other team is getting more shots and possessing the puck more than the Flyers when Grossmann is on the ice.

That's it. Zero interpretation. It's looking at a number and seeing the trend. Black and white.

- Jsaquella

I disagree. There is tons of ambiguity in the numbers. There's more then two players on the ice. The interpretation comes in when the numbers are looked at and a determination is chosen as to why the numbers are different. For example, if you separate Striet from Grossmann and in turn, Streit's possesion numbers get better, that doesn't neccessarily mean that Grossmann is the reason. This is the flawed thinking that comes from interpretation of advanced stats when taken out of context. Even the authors of advanced stats website and articles using advanced stats speak about the issue of context.

Poor Kukkonen. Andy Sutton ruined that man's game, or at least the game that he had.

We do, but we don't have many right-handed defenseman with good puck moving skills.

That's one of the issues with this team, the mix. Your pair Diaz with a guy like Grossmann and you hope their skillsets compliment each other.
