I just hope we give him a chance with Bolland and Raymond. Call it a third line if you want but they will get decent minutes. - Drapz

He is on pace to exceed, by a pretty fair margin, his best season as a Leaf. Like i said, career year. - systemtool
62 pts in 1st leafs year, on pace for 64pts this year (On pace for more goals). Not really exceed by a far margin. |

I would say that they did need a physical player in their top 6 mix. Everyone agrees the contract sucks, but it is what it is and every team has those bad deals. Just gotta move on, and find a way to make it work for your team. - systemtool
I think he's an upgrade physically but The top two lines get the job done for sure... I wonder if Chicago, Boston, LA, or any other contender have a contract like this... |

You're right, my bad. Thought he had 52 pts that year for some reason. |

Just something with him, he acted like he was Sidney Crosby when he scored and then he wouldn't do anything for 4 or 5 games again.

No, they aren't desperate enough to have to make those deals though. We were. Those teams just shuffle depth players, for the most part, outside of LA. Their core is pretty much a lock nor do they have much cap space to go shopping like the Leafs did. Better to compare the Leafs to middle of the pack teams than Cup champions. Hawks did have Brian Campbell though with that horrid deal... |

The Leafs were desperate? Lots of cap space, lots of young talent, playoff window opening... Desperate? The Leafs already had a core signed, other than Dion and Phil but those got done anyway... I just think the club bought their own hype on Wendal Clarkson. |

For that type of player? I would say so. They really wanted to add toughness to their top 6 and the options were severely limited. The Leafs core wasn't good enough to do too much damage, and they wanted to upgrade and augment. Wasn't the smartest move....but it is what it is.
It's also not fair, or wise, to assume just because you made the playoffs for the first time in close to a decade, in a 48 game season, that you're all of a sudden perennial contenders for the playoffs automatically. |

LA has had better drafting positions hence the better players, all those years they sucked, the Kings sucked worse - you probably didn't think that was possible did ya |

You saw that too huh?
I guess the term career year is a foreign concept to them. Some of them are willing to lock him down long term, beyond NEXT season for 5 million. Hope it happens. - systemtool
I don't see them negotiating until mid next season, at which point he will be a rental. Not that I hope the sens will miss the playoffs the next two season . |

Exactly. Most of those teams have a core of home grown drafted players. Not at all the case in our situation. All we have are who....Kadri, Kulemin, Rielly and Reimer? We traded our way to a playoff spot, over the course of a couple of years, and trades/signings don't come as cheap as home grown players. Especially when some of them take discounts to remain on cup contenders. |

If they did feel they needed toughness in his top six but he hasn't played there. This was a mistake, I hope someone takes him. If edmonton wants him then give him to them, take the money and spend it on the defense which should have happened in the first place, or save the space to resign guys. Either way this team wins way more games when he's not around, not hating the player at all, not fond of the move though... |

Yeah, but you could also count Kessel and JVR as we traded talent for talent. Just because WE didn't draft them doesn't mean much.
Hard to have a core when you are always finishing 9th and getting a poopty pick,
Never make the playoffs but never get a pick

I agree. Just started off all wrong from the initial 10 gamer, to another suspension to injuries. We haven't seen the best he has to offer, and maybe we never will or he can never deliver what he's done in the past, but its way way way too early to write a guy off. I find it cute when people think we're playing better because he's not playing, but hey...they have that right and can think what they want. I just send them packing with an "okay" when I find it to be a hopeless cause. |
