couple possibilities.

1) Holland missed practice today with a cut...maybe not ready to go for tomorrow, and Smith not ready to return.

2) Since they have available cap space, they called him up as an extra. Gets the kid exposed to life as an NHLer, and a raise for the next couple of days. I find the Leafs do this with the young kids once in a while to reward their strong play down in the AHL.
