For that type of player? I would say so. They really wanted to add toughness to their top 6 and the options were severely limited. The Leafs core wasn't good enough to do too much damage, and they wanted to upgrade and augment. Wasn't the smartest move....but it is what it is.
It's also not fair, or wise, to assume just because you made the playoffs for the first time in close to a decade, in a 48 game season, that you're all of a sudden perennial contenders for the playoffs automatically. - systemtool
I don't think many teams wanted him at anything over 4 million... Contenders or not... |

For the record, I only compare the LEafs to contenders because thats what they want to be, and if contenders don't overpay people, then the Leafs cannot do so if that is their wish... |

I think many teams would have taken him at what he's signed at now.
I bet we could still trade him if we wanted |

Yeah, but you could also count Kessel and JVR as we traded talent for talent. Just because WE didn't draft them doesn't mean much.
Hard to have a core when you are always finishing 9th and getting a poopty pick,
Never make the playoffs but never get a pick

Not knocking those moves at all. Im just saying, we didn't build this team the way teams like the Pens, Hawks, Kings built their cup winning teams, so it's not fair to compare out cap situation to them. |

I agree. Just started off all wrong from the initial 10 gamer, to another suspension to injuries. We haven't seen the best he has to offer, and maybe we never will or he can never deliver what he's done in the past, but its way way way too early to write a guy off. I find it cute when people think we're playing better because he's not playing, but hey...they have that right and can think what they want. I just send them packing with an "okay" when I find it to be a hopeless cause. - systemtool
Were playing better because Gards is back on the 3rd pairing.
He was playing too much when we went on the slide |

We're playing better because our top 2 lines are contributing offensively, we're getting good goaltending, Rielly is progressing and Gleason has been a solid addition. We never win or lose because one player is, or isn't, in our line up. |

Decent prospect for a player we need at the moment.
Are we sellers now or something?
Some of the ideas that get thrown around here. Sheesh!! |

Yes we didn't finish last 5 years in a row
Not tough to build a team picking 1st for 1/2 a decade
It seemed like our team would stink, we'd fold, bring up Marlies then the (frank)ing team would win a bunch and finish just put |

Bickell is over paid. Corry crawford is probably over paid starting next year.

Exactly, only 1 or 2 teams were willing to pay more, and one of them was the fantastically run Edmonton Oilers.... |

4 or 4.5 meh, he's a beast though especially in the playoffs - was hoping the leafs might get a shot at him as he's from the Toronto area ( Orono actually ) |

There's overpaid, and then there's way over paid... All teams have some amount of it but not like this. Clarkson as of today is making 3 plus million more than he should... I'm not saying he can't turn it around some and I hope he does, but contenders don't have guys brutally overpaid like this. Or if they do they trade them shortly thereafter - Brian Campbell... |

It's common knowledge that Clarkson took less to sign here because he wanted to play in Toronto for the Leafs, as a childhood dream.

Give him time, I believe he's worth more than $2.5m
(frank)ing guy has barely seen the ice and when he does he's out there with smurfs.
It's not his style Clarkson/Bolland/Kulemen would be a great 2nd/3rd line Imo |
