Decent topic.

While imo you don't really need to be a speedy team to excel in this league, It really helps when you have that threat at your disposal. Having the knowledge that your d-men can also win some races, instead of purely relying on positioning also helps in initiating the play, and controlling the game. As opposed to simply being reactionary.

The D will have their hands full with the talent they will be facing in the next few games. Should be fun.

I agree. Skating always helps, but it's not a necessity and shouldn't be used as an excuse.

Ideally, you'd like to have at least a few forwards and defenseman who are above average skaters.

Supposedly Frederik Anderson starting in goal for the Ducks, not Hiller.

Back up goalie vs the Flyers, check.

- Marc D

I half expected to see Anaheim so confident that they'd start Guy Hebert tonight.

Here the stat guys prove that Kimmo is somewhere between Duncan Keith and Erik Karlsson. Nice work, stat guys.

Comparables

But how does Timonen stack up to comparable defensemen (by cap percentage) around the NHL?

5v5 score-close stats, comparable defensemen
Defenseman (Team) Cap Hit Cap % TOI CF20 CA20 CF%
Brent Seabrook (CHI) $5,800,000 9.02% 589:10 21.759 15.513 0.584
Duncan Keith (CHI) $5,538,462 9.32% 607:37 21.889 15.635 0.583
Kimmo Timonen (PHI) $6,000,000 9.33% 436:11 19.075 16.323 0.539
Erik Karlsson (OTT) $6,500,000 9.21% 617:30 21.474 19.142 0.529
Tobias Enstrom (WPG) $5,750,000 8.94% 590:44 18.519 18.689 0.498
Kimmo's right smack in the middle, between Duncan Keith and Erik Karlsson. The O/DSt% of all 5 of those players averages out to 54.8%, so, in terms of deployment, they're all being used in the same manner. Also: stop being so ridiculously good, Chicago.

I would take Kimmo back for next year at $6M in a heartbeat. This defense is incredibly fragile and falls apart without him.

Morin got mad and threw a stick into the stands. Likely will be suspended.

At the start of the year I was mad about the extension.

Now I agree with you, I'd love to see him back one more season.

And just a few weeks ago I thought, no more then 3M.

Now I think that won't work and he'd walk. 5M might be reasonable.

OTOH if this is his last year I would like to see him go to a team at the TDL for a run at the cup, if the Flyers fall out of the playoff race.

I'm sorry to do this hear... I'm not looking to sympathy, really, I just need to Fume or I'm going to flip out here at work.

I just got a call from my wife, and she told me she has cancer. She just found out and she was really broken up.

Of course I want to rush right home to be with her, but my job is so short staffed, they dont have anyone to cover the phone calls, and told me I cant go home. I am so furious because I have been saying for a year now that I need someone else to work the same shift as me, just for reasons like this. I (frank)ing hate this (frank)ing place.

Not if they're in the playoff hunt. Trading him is folding on the season. Flyers can't survive without him.

This use of stats does not prove that a Flyer's defenseman is a slow piece of useless trash (as opposed to useful trash), and therefore is completely inadmissable.
