why do they 'need' him?Callahan has lead them nowhere.
a third line scrub who wants a big pay day.......take the pick and prospect and let someone else lead.

Yeah, you gotta be careful giving out too much money for "intangibles" and "character" instead of actual ability and production.

Clarkson never farts in the hyperbaric.

You can't put a price on character like that.

WWWWHHHAAAAATTTT?!?!?!?!!?!?

Simple business. When an asset's perceived value is higher than it's actual value, you SELL. Callahan is already almost 30, is getting hurt at increasing rates (his playing style won't help as he gets older), and has only scored 50 points once in his career, not to mention that he will cost $6M per year, at least, for 6+ years after this season to keep him. Meanwhile, they'd undoubtedly be able to get a first rounder and decent prospect for him, which would give them cap flexibility and some young talent. They really should trade him.

Yeah it would be a terrific idea for a team in the early rebuild stages with several bad contracts already to shell out for a borderline top six player whose contract they're guaranteed to regret within 3 years.

Because obviously Sather has had talks with his agent and he is either expecting too much or leaning towards free agency... what a silly question "why is Sather trying to trade Callahan?"

Come on.... Really?

- davecervo

Well considering that the rangers are in a playoff spot, it is pretty stupid to trade away one of your good players because he is a UFA. Might as well just throw in the towel for the playoffs

Oilers would have to offer WAY more than just Yakupov. Yakupov is talented and young. Big deal. Callahan is a heart and soul glue kind of guy. You're clueless if you think a first overall pick is all it will take to get Callahan.

Not at all. He's been out most of this season with an injury anyway, so it's not like he's gotten them this far. They're better off down the line by trading him for youth now.

I think this is unfair to Callahan, I mean anyone with a brain in their head knew the Clarkson signing was awful from day one. Callahan would be a little more defensible but not by much.

If the Rangers could get Yakupov for Callahan, Sather would drive Callahan to Edmonton himself.

What does this even mean? Can you give me something tangible about why Callahan is good? Let someone else be the "glue."

anyone with a brain should know that any free agent signing is awful from day one.

Not only that, but he always maintains strict eye contact in the showers.

You don't just trade away class acts like that.

I think Ek said it best:

Ryan Callahan IS the NY Rangers. Their heart and soul. Their captain. Their glue.

Any more questions?
