Was just doing a smell test on something an Oilers fan said.
- golfingsince

Hawks already used their two compliance buyouts, so any buyout would be pretty painful for the team to swallow capwise.

Wasn't Frolik brought here with the idea he could crack the top 6? He was advertised as "baby Jagr," was he not?

I'd still take Versteeg over Frolik any day.

- EKolb13

Yes...

The dream was for Frolik to be the 2nd line center and play with Hossa.

The theory was Frolik was a 20 goal scorer on a bad team so when surrounded by great talent he would flourish.

Like I have said in the past....Frolik will likely never forget what Q did for him by turning him into a PK specialist and a vg 4th line player.

Big trip starts on sour note with 5-4 OT loss. Now Brandon Pirri's on a big audition: On The Blackhawks-Fox Chicago:http://bit.ly/MfODRC

Yeah, won't happen then. An Oilers fan was asking about the last successful big name UFA signing, so I offered up Hossa. He claimed there was talk about him being bought out this summer.

It's not panic mode, it's just accepting reality. They're just not a very good team right now. Period.
- Ogilthorpe2

Agreed. That's not to say they're not capable of turning it around, though. Time will tell.

....And I believe only players signed before the new CBA can be bought out.
So Bickell isn't a candidate in case anyone is wondering even if one was left...

10 points in 45 season games last year, 10 in the playoffs. Good guy, decent player, but moving him wasn't the end of the world.

Ogie, your boy Fistric just re-upped with the Ducks for 3 years/$3.8 million. I thought you might want to know...

Ducks must like collecting big, slow defenceman. Now they have 4 - Fistric, Allen, Beauchemin and IR Souray.

JJ says:
Are you kidding me, you blaming this on the salary cap.
SB gambled and lost. the Bickel contract was a bit too high. What were they expecting that Bickel would turn into a 4 to 5million dollar man or another Lucic. if they could save 500k on one of those contracts, leddys or Bickels - they could have kept Frolik.
i am not sure of Bolland's impact as he was hurt a majority of the time.
Stahlberg helped that 3rd line click - opened up tons of space which you don't see on the scoresheet. Plus that 3rd line was together for awhile.
but the 3rd line is really hurt - because you have a dman on the wing a majority of the time.
Was the Versteeg pick up really that good - he lost a step and is not the same Versteeg from 2010.

So is this the new meme? It's Stan's fault! ...roundup the pitchforks and torches, time to storm the castle!

Whatever the problems this year...they're in the locker room, not the boardroom. IMO.

He was excellent PK man and though our pk's been better of late...it's nowhere near the top 5 level it was last year. We miss him HUGE.

Spot on EK - everyone was trumpeting how the Hawks had unloaded...wait for it...
Jack Skille and gotten Frodo...who was the next coming but he wasn't. He couldn't score. He couldn't get any kind of points. He had a ton of talent, but he couldn't finish. People on this board couldn't wait to get rid of him. And then last season Q made him into one of the PK specialists and it took off. He reinvented his game and off you go. I think he's great and a great player hated to lose him.

But he was playing on the 4th line and he was going to command more money. The biggest concern was he was missed on the PK this year. Yet the PK has really come on as of the last few weeks here. They've really clamped down.

Meanwhile Versteeg is a top 6 forward (as Al also mentions) on a lot of teams and brings a lot to the table and you're getting him at a discount. Yes he's coming back from surgery but... How bout the chip from behind the Flames net last night to Kaner? How bout the goal he scored against Anaheim last week? But what I like is he steps right into the fray. The other week against the Habs Kane was taking a bunch of hits and Bickell wouldn't do a thing. Yet here comes Steeger challenging one of their guys.

Meanwhile we let Stalberg walk and got Versteeg back. No he's not the 2010 Versteeg. But he does score goals, go into corners and scraps for the puck. And he'll go after people.

What are you guys hearing about Hossa possibly getting bought out this summer?
- golfingsince

They can't use the compliance buyout on him. They used their 2 freebies. And I think a regular buyout would kill the cap space. That, I don't know for sure but remember seeing it would be a big hit for quite a few years.

Edit: welcome to 30 minutes ago, idiot.

Pretty sure without looking it up a regular buyout is half the salary at twice the years or something. Maybe they'll do it in 5 years.....
