Except that you said he wouldn't take a discount with Colorado to win. If you now say he'll go to a contender...well I hate to say it but teams like the Blackhawks and Blues aren't contenders because of bad over-priced contracts. They lock up their core to pretty good dollar values similar to what the Avs have been doing.

Exactly, if he wants to go to a contender to win now, he would be taking a paycut and a short term deal. Or he could take probably the same deal or even a little bit better to stay wtih the Avs on a longer term with more secuirity.

With the way we are trending up, we have the same playoff shot and anything can happen in the playoff chances category with a lot of teams who would want to sign him (Rangers, Columbus, Toronto, Montreal, etc etc), if thats the case why not just stay with the team you grew up with and try and win it with thm in the next 5-6 years.

Correct. Find me the last player under 30 years old, looking to get his last long term deal, to take a "hometown discount"

It does not happen. You may disagree, but this does not happen.

Again could he prove me wrong, yes. But I am not holding my breath for him to do so.

For example Sedins, Kesler, Zetterberg all left money on the table on long term deals. It happens more often than you think. He will get bw 5-6, he wont get over 6 again.

I don't think money is the big concern here. If Stastny leaves, its because he's unsure about his future with the Avs. Duchene and MacKinnon are the future 1-2 centers for the team. Once MacKinnon takes his spot will Stastny be ok with playing on the 3rd line? Also, when Mac gets his next contract will the team be willing to pay all 3 centers 6 millish? If the answer to either of those questions is no, he'll be out of Colorado in 2-3 years.

It's probably in his best interest to move on now to a team where he fits better into the future plans as top 2 center. For the Avs, a 2-3 year deal would be ideal.

Thats my only worry too. Money wont be the determining factor in his resigning, its his role moving forward. I think they try and offer him a 4 year deal. Gives Mac 2 years left on ELC and probably a 2 year bridge deal. Give Stastny b/w 5-6 in that deal, which he would be 32-33 by the end of that. Still young and productive enough if he wanted to go to Market he could cash in, or he could be ok with winding down with the Avs just do short term deals after that liek Sakic and Hejduk did.

I'm not worried, i'd be a lot more worried if they were buried in the standings underachieving. This is an excellent problem to have and with Sakic in control, it feels comfortable. That comfort wasn't there in recent years.

Yes, the risk of losing someone for nothing always pops up, but in the end of the day, Stastny is what, $6.6 million and a key piece we'll need for the playoffs (which I can't even believe we're discussing this year).

That's a lot of money and the Avs would be losing a position player of great strength to throw at a big name d-man.

I think all of you guys are letting a little cynicism get to you. Stastny has never given any signs the stuff you guys are talking about being an issue. Everything you are worried about is all just your personal opinion of what YOU think he will do. What he has been saying have been quite the opposite.

If Stastny does sign here I'm sure he'll be sure to get a no trade clause. 4 years of trade rumors has to be pretty annoying.

Im not that worried about it really under our current sytem, its not like we have a defined 1st, 2nd, and 3rd line. We roll out all 3 lines equally and have the talent spread out among the centres. He would never really be labled a 3rd line center while playing under the Roy lead Avs

Not that Stastny isn't important but....I just realized that my plans to watch the Avs game tonight is ruined because of the game being tomorrow night.

Do you guys realize how devestating that is?
