the only part of that you can use as an argument was the rask for raycroft trade. most of us could see rask was the better goalie after he won best goalie at the juniors while pogge had the way better supporting cast, except for of course jfj.

the others all involved picks, which could end up being a star or a flop, too much uncertainty. for example if the leafs trade kadri for a 7th round pick, do the leafs lose the trade? yes. what if the 7th round pick ends up being the next datsyuk? do the leafs win the trade? no. they got amazing value for the 7th, but they could have gotten much more value than a 7th initially.

Yes, but when the picks you give up end up being at the top of the draft...

There's still no guarantee about the pick though, and every team has made bad trades involving picks.

Yes, every team has, just not as many that end up being top 3 picks.

I'll take that as a compliment....

this is true, but i think if they landed a solid D that could go a long way not a rental mind you... but someone who can play this year and next. With the group of forwards we have someone is going to be an odd man out. Might as well move that odd man out for a piece we don't have that we can currently use. Not sure if i agree PA is that odd man out, but we will see what the avs have to say about it

Fair shot. However, I'm still correct.

Besides, Jankowski was a 24th overall pick (not that it made it any less idiotic) and the picks I'm talking about were lottery picks. Even GMs as dumb as Feaster have a hard time (frank)ing those up.

Pens and Kadri, eh? Well, I'm going to call BS on this one. Other than a 1C, we don't need anything they have.

Of course, it IS true that Nonis has been floating the idea of a 'larger' move in the media. Not sure if this falls within the realm of possibility though...

I guess it would be for Malkin -- and Kadri would end up as their 2C.

People seem to be saying Gardiner would be part of it, but I'm pretty sure Reilly would be the piece to move. And probably everything else we have of value too.

Kadri, Reilly, 1st for Malkin?
Is that even enough? Not likely...

It would definitely free up a bunch of cap space for the Pens to make other moves though. Like if they wanted get Miller and/or Moulson and extend them.

Anyway, still seems implausible to me. I'm just spitballing.

They have alot of good D prospects.

Hell no, they wouldn't. They've got 2 much better than great C's at 1 and 2 and a very good #3 as well. They need a potential stud 2-way D much more.

And the Leafs would get another potential stud D, and a big gaping hole at 2/3 C.

Canucks are in sell mode - they can't even beat the second worst team in the league

I dont see the point of trading Kadri to a conference rival, if anything trade him to the west.

the picks were not lottery picks. the leafs were projected to finish around 20th that season, and with kessel maybe as high as 17ish. after the trade leaf fans were expecting the cup probably lol. then we all know what happened and the picks ended up as lottery picks. it was a very good gamble by chiarelli, he even admitted he didnt think the picks would end anywhere near that position.

i think most teams would take the kessel side of the deal now. seguin will be a great player, maybe one day even better than kessel, but for now the goal scoring stud comes out on top. hamilton was overhyped, i see him as a 2nd pairing dman at best.

I have no issue with what the team did. They won two cups, were terrible for a few years, gathered a lot of good draft picks, won another cup, and are now a top team that will contend for the cup for the better part of a decade. I would rather deal with bad years and a full rebuild than watch a mediocre team that spends too much on FA and continues to finish middle of the pack.
- mw630

Not saying it's a bad thing. Just saying it's not like they made some magical move to become a top team. They did it the easy way. There's no reason to respect it. Any team other than Edmonton would be in the same boat if they did the same thing.

We should also all remember that the Leafs almost beat the team that steamrolled the Penguins in the playoffs last year.
