Well back in the day they didnt have antibiotics or tetnus shots...getting a flesh wound sometimes was a death sentence.
- PhillaBully

Yes, but it wasn't some long, days-on-end agonizing death. It was fairly quick.

Bill, I'm surprised you removed the posts from a couple of us who called out the individual who posted "Fist"! Neither of us used any salty language in calling the poster out, and he misspelled it as well! Do you condone this nonsense?

Right. But my question is why the arrow to the ankle was fatal. I mean, people get cut on their ankle all the time and seldom die.
- jmatchett383

This is from the National Center for Biotechnology Information:

"The Achilles tendon is the strongest, largest and thickest tendon in the human body and plays an important role in the biomechanics of the lower extremity. The blood supply of the tendon is from the peroneal and posterior tibial arteries. It is quite likely that the arrow which killed Achilles was poisoned. This supposition could be of course enough to cause his death. In case the arrow was not poisoned a rupture of the posterior tibial artery by the arrow could have caused a bleeding, but it seems unlikely for such a bleeding to be lethal. Moreover, a combination of these two theories could have also taken place, i.e. a poisoned arrow traumatizing the posterior tibial artery and hence causing rapid diffusion of the poison as well as bleeding. Furthermore, infectious and/or immunologic bases regarding Achilles' death could be considered."

One variation does say that Paris shoots him in the ankle, thus immobilizing him, and then shoots him fatally. So basically, he was made "mortal' (unable to use his gift of speed) by the arrow to the ankle. But most say it was just an ordinary arrow to the ankle (no poison) and he just basically drops dead a few moments later.

But what would you do? You are one of the best college players, and you have to choice of joining Calgary, or going anywhere else... what would you do?
- youarewrong

I'd play it like Paul Kariya... easily crack a bad top-6, see a ton of offensive ice, pile on the points, and become the face of a franchise.

But what would you do if you decided to finish your College career instead of heading straight to the NHL, and in your last year you had the choice of a) joining the team that drafted you... that looks like they are going to be bad for a long time... or b) become a free-agent and sign where-ever you want, which may include your home-town and your favorite team....
- youarewrong

In all honesty, considering my career could always end in an instant, i'd go free agent and sign with the highest bidder

Go Cup chasing in Colorado, become irrelevant, return to your original team, get knocked out cold by Scott Stevens, come back and score a goal, lose SC Finals in 7 games, go on to play in Nashville and remain obscure despite your point production, sign big deal with St. Louis, underachieve, and retire without fanfare.

Question:

I just watched Troy yesterday, the movie starring Brad Pitt. In the movie, Paris shoots Achilles in the heel with an arrow, then puts another 4 into him. Yet, Achilles was supposedly immortal, save for his heel. In the actual myth, he's hit only in his ankle, and he dies. How the hell would an arrow to the heel kill someone?

- jmatchett383

Um, it's a myth. Fiction. Anything can happen in fiction.

Unless you get some huge signing bonus/bonus-laden contract (which are regulated), you're making the same amount no matter where you go, whatever the rookie max is ($950K at the NHL level, I think).

He moderates on the blog-level, though, right? Didn't Berry get pissed at him for pulling some of his blogs over content?

It seems more advantageous than pulling a Blake Wheeler, getting myself stuck behind a veritable army of good forwards, then getting traded to Winnipeg, lol.

Right, but 950k in Calgary, or 950k in Boston or Pittsburg or Chicago....

Personally I would sign with the Flyers first, just because of being a fan, but if Flyers arent interested... I would likely go with a team like LA. Great foundation for the team... Good young goalie.. Great young defense.. and the core players... while overpaid now... are signed for long contracts... meaning the team will likely stay together, and down the line Richards, Carter, Voynov, Brown, and Kopitar will likely be considered underpaid... which will free a lot of money for my resignings and the team to add more UFA pieces... plus its LA.
