But Carle was a UFA & there was no one here to take his place, no, he wasn't worth the $$$, but thats what happens when you don't have a replacement
- puckhead17

Or when you prioritize a stay at home, limited banger over a good skater and puck mover. When they signed Grossmann to the in-season extension, it meant that Carle had to wait until the new cap was set. Between Grossmann's new deal & the new cap, Calgary traded for Dennis Wideman and gave him a 5 year deal for $5.25mm per. That meant Carle was going to cost more than the Flyers expected.

They doubled down and traded JvR for Luke Schenn...and that might have been mainly because he was a righty shot.

That's what happens when you draft poorly.

Or don't have many picks because you traded them for Pronger, Grossmann and Kubina.

Paul Holmgren's been Flyers GM for 8 years. He's made 3 second round picks in that time.

Not second rounders that made the team, in total

A righty shot AND they thought they were getting a young Luke Richardson

again, yes, they like & think a banger will scare opposing forwards around the net, haven't seen anyone scared to jam our crease yet

Two of them were in the last two drafts, London goalie Anthony Stolarz and Swedish defenseman Robert Hagg. Both are actually promising.

And based on this draft only 2 D worth writing about, others aren't bad but will probably take time to further develop.

Pitkanen was a whipping boy here after while, (more then Coburn), & the jury is still out on Sbisa, the Ducks had 3 D men injured & he was still in the AHL

What do you think about trading Timonen for Demers?

Lets face it Timonen won't be back after this season and shouldn't be back. The Sharks are desperate to win the cup and their window is closing with Marleau and Thornton. This year is as good as any they'll have in the next few to win it, so Doug Wilson may over pay for someone like Timonen.

Then, next year I'd roll d pairs like....

Niskanen/Girardi Streit
Demers Coburn
Gusty Schenn

Obviously Mezsaros and Grossman aren't here next season

It won't be so glaring once the Flyeres realize that in this league now, more than ever, whoever you put on the ice has to be able to freaking skate.

I'm watching Blackhawks/Jets now. Take the Blackhawks out of it. They're the champions. We already know they're talented and accomplished.

Winnipeg, on the other hand, is just a .500 team. Not great, not awful.

But holy hell, every single one of the defensemen they have dressed -- Byfuglien's playing forward tonight -- can freaking move. It's unbelievable to watch.

The Jets are playing their fourth game in six nights, like we were yesterday. But they are only down 1-0 after two periods, because they can skate with the Blackhawks.

That is the difference, and what has to change with the Flyers. If you want a few defensive defensemen, OK.

But they have got to be able to skate. You have to be able to move in the NHL, now more than ever.

The culture that needs to change isn't leaving the Bullies behind. It's to start holding guys accountable, like they did during those days. It's a delicate balance and you have to be willing to bench a star player for a period or two at times, to send a message.

That goes for managers and coaches as well. I've defended Holmgren for a couple years. Well, I'm no longer sure he's the guy to right the ship. At the same time, I'm not sure that it will be a massive task to right things.

I back read and somebody called them a laughingstock. Edmonton is a laughing stock, they haven't made the playoffs in nearly a decade and have drafted in the top 10 for 7 years straight. That's a laughingstock. Columbus has been around 13 or 14 years and has yet to win a playoff game. That is a laughingstock.

The Flyers are a talented team, but have a bad mix of players. They need changes, but they also need to embrace better all around play-better defensive play from the forwards, smarter play from the defense, more discipline and avoiding penalties and better puck support.

We've seen them do it, from November through early December. They have to get back to that and sustain it.
