Had a guy on my hockey team whose dad did this to his stick. The refs gave him a penalty on the opening draw and took his stick away.

i swear I heard my old man mutter (frank) under his breath a couple of time when I broke a stick. Also would get an inventory afterwards too.

The guy's dad wasn't poor, just cheap.

Back then a stick was less than $20.

Clearly remember that - always made sure the Louisville Slugger oval faced me.

Wonder if that was really necessary b

Never knew if it was or wasn't. Just didn't take a chance. I was one of the younger kids in the neighborhood and among the male cousins. I was in no position to argue. I was just happy to be in the group.

Suburbs, man - courts at the junior high school across the street from our house.
- StLBravesFan

You had the junior high across the street? I had to walk 100 miles, in the snow, each way to my school.

You only need 2 or 3. They lasted forever for christ sakes. Worse was I bought my own. My Uncle sold newspapers on Sundays out side the local church. Strangely my cousin always had to study on the coldest freakng Sundays. Be out there at 4:30 in the morning freezing my ass off and stuffing all the ads. Was worth it though. My Uncle paid well.

I had to shovel fire hydrants out, $90 a month and I had 3 of them. Didn't have to pay for gear, but food on all of the road trips. Winter started in October and ended in April, snow banks got 5 feet high easily.

Hey was Humbolt Park safe to play at ? In the late 50's the park was considered "a bad neighborhood" Than again I lived in a Lilly white neighborhood ...to see a black or Spanish person was rare. Our grade school had no minorities ...we did have a few "hillbillys". I thought as a 9 year old that these kids must have come from a different country. They probably thought the same thing about me. Everything kind of changed after the Shuster/Peterson murders. I now kind of feel bad how the city was so racially divided in the 50's.

It could be the middle of the summer and at 4:30 in the morning, I am freezing either way. Yeah, a huge difference between hockey in Canada and in Chicago back in the 70's It was a road trip just to get to the rink. Weren't many around here then. Shoveling was a rite of passage in my family. you turned 10 and got your own shovel.

The area to the east side of Humboldt park changed a lot sooner than to the West. In the late 60's is when the league I played in stopped playing there because the equipment would get stolen. Our grade school was all white until I was in 5th or 6th grade. When the neighborhood changed, it changed fast.

Yeah no kidding. We had an outdoor rink across the street, one at my school and several others around town. I played 7 days a week at the indoor rink.

I've been to Chicago a few times, great city. Friends of the family lived in Downers Grove.

Its funny. The town I live in used to have a really nice outdoor rink every year for a while. Boards, even put 2 nets on it. Rarely did you see anyone on it. Every once in awhile I throw my skates on, grab a stick and puck and have the thing to myself. I was always hoping some kids would show to get a game of pond hockey going. As a kid we would have killed to have that.

We had neighbourhood teams for awhile for hockey, baseball, touch football. We'd organize a game and show up for bragging rights.

The good ole days.

The Chicago Park District would flood the football field every winter. Unfortunately, the park custodian was a Richard and wouldn' t allow us to play hockey on the ice during the day...so we would play after he went home. We would play in the dark. I moved to Asland and Damen around 1960. The RAINBOW ARENA was three block from our house. Since there were no other indoor ice rinks in Chicago at that time we use to sneak in on a holiday and watch the Blackhawks practice in the morning. Sometimes Bobby would give me one of his broken stick. Bobby was always friendly...Stan not so.

That second assist was Pirri lifting the puck way up into the air. Ross eventually found it in the neutral zone, and Mashinter knocked in a garbage rebound.

It was a horrible game overall. One of the jackasses driving the Zamboni scraped the ice too deep during the first intermission which led to an hour long delay to start the 2nd period. Crappy ice conditions for the rest of the game.
