What they don't have any more is kids going out every nite playing ball on their own - pick up games, however many show up.
If parents aren't involved now, they don't play.
Don't know if it's the parents fault or the kids. - StLBravesFan
Play from the time you got up until it got too dark. Then it was time for chase games. We used to run all over the block and no one cared. Everyone looked after all the kids. And heaven forbid one of your friend's parents yelled at you. Best just take it. Telling your parents only meant you got it again. |

in our league. once you were on a team, you were there until you moved up a level. Or you took a year off. (frank) playing right field and 2nd base. Especially when you knew you were better than the 12 year olds. Its why its better now. FFs, your 9 and have to wait until your 11 to play the whole game. - Elbows15
That sucks. In mine, you played 2 years in each league: 1st u were the youngest than the older ones in it. We had B-league, A-league, national league, then American. Didn't play Senior league. We were never a big town so I don't think anyone was benched. Maybe one kid at most but they always got him in there. I was shortstop and pitcher. I sucked at pitcher, though because I was afraid of hitting people. I bet you would want to hit people? |

Definitely a different time Glen. The parents used to be sitting out until 10 -11 in the summer time. Everything was about the block you lived on. We would have games against the kids from the other blocks and have our own tournaments. They were wars. |

I go back to late 50's and early 60's...parents weren't really involved because they felt we were safe..baseball or football all day and then hide and go seek...but when mom called you in you better be within earshot and hear her... |

Yeah we would play football in a park or go to our school's lot with our fat albert plastic bat that we would tape up and play. The school is a lot different now though and there is no room to play now. All the neighborhood kids would play. Everyone was friendly. Such innocent times. That was in the 70's and early 80's. Nothing like it now |

Played everywhere in the infield TC. When I came back as an 11 yr old, I was on a stacked team. We were good. Played wherever the guy pitching played. Mostly short and third. Pitched some. More as a 12 yr old. Hated pitching. I would get so jacked, I was wild. Pitched relief a lot. By that time I had settled in. Naw, never wanted to hit anyone. Played with or against the same kids the whole time. we were buddies. Just good natured ribbing. If someone hit one over the fence, we all slapped hands as they ran around the bases. |

TG played in a 38 and up baseball tournament last weekend. Played 6 games in 48 hours and won.
There are ex pros and other in their mid and upper 50s still throwing 75 and dealing.
Its fun to hang onto your youth, even more fun to still compete and just makes you feel blessed to be alive.

Exactly. We organized our games. Just meant that everyone's parents looked out for you. We played everything. Whatever was in season. There was a park by the house that had a hockey league. Outdoors, of course. Still some of the best ice I ever skated on. |

Played American Legion ball for a couple of years and had some sniffs. Never really loved the game enough, tbh. By that time I was playing more basketball and hockey. Really weren't any leagues in those days once you reached a certain age. |

I'm disappointed in you. You would congratulate someone on the other team? That's just wrong I would hit the person who homered off of me the next time he was up just kidding. Nobody ever homered on me. |

Don't get me wrong. I would hammer my own cousin to win. guess we were taught the fun was in the competition. As long as you played hard and within the rules, winning was important, just wasn't everything. LOL.The guys that usually hit the homers were the pitchers. They got their paybacks as I rounded the bases. Laughing the whole way. So were they though. |

Yep. Though if you had a plan. You went around and snagged all the empty pop bottles and returned them for their deposits and had your money ready. Why leave it to chance?
Edit: Ours were the MR.Softy trucks though. LOL |
