I just read on TSN that Mike Green is available and the Caps might be looking for a defensive D-man. If the Caps were willing would you trade Luke Schenn for Green?
- mickel25

Green has had injury issues and has nearly twice as high a cap hit...but yes, I'd do it.

Yes.

Does Schenn for Green straight up seem reasonable? Green has $6+mil cap hit and is signed thru 2014-2015. Luke Schenn has a $3.6mil cap hit through 2015-2016.

I just hate how they feel the need to sign big free agents every offseason. They shouldn't go after these big fish unless it's a major need and a great player. It was fine to go after Suter but did they really need guys like lecavalier or parise?
- PhillySportsGuy

If you are close to being a contender, go for it. but they still have a ways to go and I think they have used free agency to make up for lack of high end prospects. realistically, they are full of 3rd and 4th line prospects up front. Yes, they are young in general but still, you need to keep the prospects coming

I have no doubt they will start playing well again and start winning, then play like they are now etc etc. and when they win, its will be fun. and when they lose, people will lose their minds. But that is just it, I am sick of the roller coaster that are your Philadelphia Flyers. I will never stop watching but its just do heartbreaking to be such a huge fan and seeing how far away they are from a cup. to look back and know injuries to the defense stole a cup (freaking tampa), how just an average display of goaltending probably wins a cup in 2010, how they had a stud in Pronger have his career snatched away and how they finally have a good young goalie and be so far from being a true cup contender.

I don't really buy into the whole "lack of effort" concept as being the biggest issue with this team. Obviously, there are times when effort IS an issue, but no more or no less than with other teams. In my opinion it's the overall lack of speed and quickness that makes them appear that they're not trying 100%.

We constantly see them being beaten to loose pucks, not because they're not hustling, but because they simply don't have the requisite team quickness necessary in today's game. This lack of team speed (and QUICKNESS, not just speed) has been killing them for years, especially in the defensive zone.

However, if Homer/Hexy can swap out of a couple of the slower D men, say Grossmann and Mez, and a slower forward or two, for some speed it will immediately appear as if they have improved their overall effort. Actually they'll just be winning more races to loose pucks ... which is a good thing.

The talent is there, but it's seriously missing some fast-twitch players. As soon as a healthy dose of speed and quickness is added to this lineup, the Flyers will be a much, much better team.

- FlyerGuy

I remember when Berube first took over he was focusing on "quickness" and I believe he had the guys playing with more of it for a while...while some guys are slower than others, the quickness can also be partly a mental thing...they need to initiate and be decisive more often versus being tentative and reactionary in things they do.

The Cubs haven't come that close since their last title. The Flyers have been in contention almost every year since their last title. It's a statistical anomaly that they haven't won one since.

That was just one of their beats spouting off:

Because unlike other players, Green might still bring the Caps something good in return, maybe even a veteran tough guy, a defensive defenseman for a change.

Really doubt McPhee is trading Green for Grossmann/Schenn and Rosehill to satisfy those requirements.

he's building his tired, old straw-man argument and overstating what people are offering as fixes to this obvious-to-most middle of the pack team. any time someone suggests facing reality and recognizing they are more than a tweak or two away from legit contenders, here comes the "let's just dress the phantoms, and lose every game on purpose" nonsense. no one is saying that or ever has that i've seen.
now the risk id that if you go into rebuild mode you risk not being very good, which nobody wants; the problem is that they're not very good now and can't seem to figure it out with any consistency

- hogweed

No, you were very clear before. Since this team has no legit shot as a contender, the only responsible thing to do is to throw the season and draft as high as possible.

Why would Toronto trade a very talented young defenseman for a 33 year old with declining stats coming off a broken back who is signed for 4 more years at a sizeable cap hit? They could probably trade Gardiner for a young guy who better fits and has a more manageable cap hit.
- Jsaquella

I think MDZ put into perspective what you can expect for Gardiner. And Lecavalier would still be Toronto's top center, and his cap hit is very resonable considering the raising of the cap. I mean we might have to throw in Gus or something, but the structure is there IMO.

Since we're playing GM; my turn... In a three team trade
Flyers get: Bobby Ryan
Dustin Byfuglien

Ottawa gets: Evander Kane

Winnipeg gets: Matt Read
Michael Raffl
Taylor Leier
Braydon Coburn
Luke Schenn
Tye McGinn

Lecavalier then waives his no trade clause to go to Montreal. Flyers get Rene Bourque in return. Downie re-signs. Timonen retires and Meszaros signs elsewhere. Flyers sign Matt Greene and Dan Girardi. Then dump Grossman for a 4th rounder. Flyers sign Patrick Eaves and re-sign Emery.

Marion Gaborik???? He's expensive, soft, pays no attention to his defensive responsibilities, and is about as durable as the three pigs' straw house!! On the other hand, Homer buds against himself for aging vets, well last their prime, at stupid money, for way too many years!!! In the words of Carlos Mencia....."Deet da dee!!!"

- Hokeeguy9

IMO you might make a steal is Gaborik. A lot of teams will be turned off by some of the things you said. I would expect you could give him a Semin-Mason deal. 1 year deal to show your still a good player and get a bigger pay day next year. Give him 1 year at 5 million.... its not like there is anyone else on this team waiting to step up as a sniper on this team.

I feel that money could be better spent in other areas. The team has enough offense. It would be another luxury signing like the Lecavalier signing.

Flyers are definitely an average, middle-of-the-pack team. No doubts about that.
- wolfhounds

That is true, but look at how quickly Columbus turned from a bottom dwelling team, to a decent team. It just took a few tweaks. All the Flyers need are a few tweaks. Make the defense a bit more moble with passing skills... Get a top line sniper to play with your all-star playmaker, and get a 4th line that can play either strong defense, or physically pounding (not goons more like Otts).

I can see 1-2 trades taking care of this... Whether its Gardiner, Buff, or someone else... or getting Markov in the off-season... some of it can be handled in UFA.

We will likely have about 14 million in cap space... use it.

Alright, my turn.

Flyers trade Read, B Schenn, Coburn, Morin, Laughton, and 2 1sts to Nashville for Shea Weber.

Flyers acquire Santa Clause for Hartnell.

Snider sends a team of mercenaries to Bryan Murray's house to convince him to trade Bobby Ryan for Rosehill.

Flyers trade Voracek and Schenn for Byfuglien, who promptly eats 55 cheese steaks and weighs in at 423 pounds. He is promptly traded away for fan favorite Dan Carcillo.

Flyers resign Gagne at 6-years, $4M per.

Mason explodes (literally).

Flyers lineup:

Ryan - Giroux - Santa Clause (he's a winger)
Akeson - Lecavalier - Gagne
Simmonds - Couturier - Raffl
Carcillo - Hall - Rinaldo
Weber - Alt
Gustafsson - Lauridsen
Gill - Streit
Heeter
Stolarz

Any questions about this team NOT being a Cup Favorite are void.
