In conference trades happen all the time. Hell the original Kessel deal was an in-division trade.
- Jsaquella

Yes and the Leafs gave up a lot! Thats what I'm saying. The deal would need to be significantly better than an out of conference deal.

You have to worry more about helping your own team. Del Zotto was a heathy scratch, the Rangers were trying like Hell to deal him. It wasn't as if they were particular.
- Jsaquella

again, how does anyone know if they were being particular?
we never heard a rumor here about him or anything, especially knowing we need a player of his ilk so badlly

I'd have been interested in Schenn and maybe a mid tier prospect. In the right system, with the right partners, the Flyers group of defensemen can be fine, individually.

But playing together, on a team where the forwards sometimes forget there's a defensive zone and playing with each other as partners...Blech

- Jsaquella

Who is a mid-tier prospect? Don't say Cousins.

But you used 2 bad examples, thats all I'm saying, (Lindros picked where he wanted to go) & Froese was 25 years ago, nothing since, its not like they are normal trade partners
- puckhead17

I'm using two recent examples. Plus the Kessel trade. All I am saying is it happens. If a team can fill it's own need, dealing with a rival should be a secondary concern.

I doubt the Flyers even bothered to ask. But I sure as Hell would have.

Maybe Alt, but those other guys are fringe prospects.

Mid-tier prospects are guys who will make the NHL but won't be major impact players.

right, (recent example Froese?), we don't know if they bothered to ask, we never will know, I just don't think we would be at the top of their list, being what a point behind them?

The Leafs got a guy coming off a 36 goal season at age 22. That definitely costs a pretty significant return.

Del Zotto was a healthy scratch under a new coach and the Rangers were desperate to make a deal.

I would be a lot more worried about the 22 year old 36 goal scorer coming back to bite me in the ass than the defenseman who was a regular healthy scratch and only started playing regularly after a couple of injuries.

So, yeah, no doubt the Bruins got significantly more for Kessel.

If I'm Sather, I don't want Schenn. At least not enough to trade Del Zotto to the Flyers.

It's possible they wouldn't have said yes. But I also think that a lot of folsk are overplaying the in-divisional trade stuff.

I just don't believe the FLYERS weren't pursuing Del Zotto at all. I have a hard time thinking they didn't inquire about him.

I don't think they said "Oh man, we should have made an effort to acquire him."

He was on the market for a while. I'm pretty sure every team inquired about him.

for a very large package that brought a lot of criticism Burke's way, in that he gave up too much.
anyway I didn't bring that trade up, yes it happens, but also at the time Toronto was a struggling team as well.

I don't think they were pursuing him at all. Hell, they had Gustafsson who was sitting himself.

I have serious concerns about the way this team approaches team building and utilizes assets.

Certainly. Trading a 22 year old coming off a 36 goal season is MASSIVELY different than trading a struggling guy who your new coach has benched and who you're actively trying to trade.

Generally the first guy in that scenario will get you a much higher return, whether it's in division or not.

well I agree, I wish we would have known if they inquired about him, damn, its not like players with his skill level on the back end move everyday, but, we will not know, if they are asked as much & say "not interested" it would pi$$ off a lot of fans even more I'm sure.

If Homer didn't ask, he had to at least consider acquiring him.

If he did, but decided Dell Zotto wasn't a fit, then fine. But if he didn't consider it, then he didn't do his so-called due diligence and should be horsewhipped.
