Players that act tough don't drop em. Kesler got painted as a diver for his antics a over a couple seasons. Hasn't been an issue since torts was around. Kes fought Brown and Iginla I believe this year possibly more? Marchand is a guy who acts tough cause he has his big teammates to protect him. Matt Cooke (unsure of recent play) used to be a guy who acted tough. Kesler plays a the game hard and will back up his tough play when it calls for it.

When you think about it, the Pens and blackhawks, and even the Canucks in their prime would be better defined by "fast and skilled" than they would by big and bruising", so I don't think that formula is impossible to replicate.

What fast and skilled teams do need is to A) constantly have their motor running and outwork bigger stronger teams and B) be good defensively.

The Oilers need to change these aspects of their makeup moreso than changing the team philosophy in my opinion.

Its more of the fact your team has to be so over loaded with talent and skill that its very difficult to hold onto for more than a couple years. Whereas the big strong teams don't seem to have an issue with it. The real issue has been the change in reffing. Hooking, holding and obstructional interference are not called with any kind of consistency. Maybe it was all the concussions resulting from allowing guys to skate unhindered and the NHL didn't like the press it was getting?

Look at the Blackhawks circa 2010. Lost all their depth after their cup run. In the cap world it is difficult to maintain their overabundance of speed and skill. You lose the players for cap reasons. After 2011 run the Canucks lost some key contributors because of the cap. Its a lot easier to find a 3rd or 4th liner with size than a 3rd or 4th liner who can skate and score.

Iggy and Kes have fought quite a few times. Kes drops em when its needed. You say burrows is acting tough and you make a fair point. Kesler is not at that level.

Both are much harder players to play against physically then most of the Oilers roster..plus they actually know how to play defense. But if you hate them as much as I hate Marchand then I understand.
