It's been a while since the Flyers plucked a gem in UFA. Jagr was a good one. Talbot was as well. Not much other than those two though.
- PhillySportsGuy

Well technically Hartnell and Timonen weren't UFAs as their rights were traded for, but they were very good pickups and still had to be signed before July 1st that summer. Overall, I thought Briere was a good pickup too, if only for what he did in the playoffs.

I also think the Flyers have done pretty well in signing undrafted free agents at very reasonable rates, especially Matt Read, but also Gustafsson and Raffl.

Which one did you like better?
- jmatchett383

Therein was overall the better defender, and in his prime was usually on the ice in the last minute of a period or game to protect a lead and also on the top pk unit as well. McGillis had a big shot, but he wasn't anything special as a playmaker or skater and he could make some truly awful plays in his own zone.

I don't know, I couldn't say, each one was ok as a support player, each had their own strengths & weaknesses.

I wouldn't mind having one or both in their prime now

Luke Richardson was a player with no mobility, no offensive skills, but was really mean & nasty around the net, I guess thats what Homer thought he was getting when he acquired Luke Schenn.

- puckhead17

Maybe he will be, and Max Domi will hide behind a teammate from Schenn.

From that response I'm guessing the mood has not exactly been rosy around here today.

We need to trade everyone for someone else because everyone stinks.

Then, once we've traded everyone for someone else, we'll need to trade someone else for another someone else, because all of the someone elses stink.

Curious to hear what all of you think of the following:

I don't see any way that the Flyers, with their issues on D, are even a dark horse contender for the Stanley Cup this year. Yes, they may make the playoffs, but it's highly doubtful, at least to me, that they would even win one round.

With that being said I propose the following:
Ask Timonen and VL if they would be receptive to a trade to a contender or in VL's case a short list of teams of his choosing. Then move them for the best available package of picks and prospects.

Trade Downie, I'm not sure he worth re-signing anyway.
Trade Grossmann. A contender looking for a defensive dman/penalty killing shot blocker just might give you a late 2nd for him.
Trade Mezsaros for what you can get for him, with his injury history I can't see them even considering to re-sign him.

This would leave the following lineup
Raffl-Giroux-Voracek
Hartnell-Schenn-Simmonds
McGinn or Read-Couturier-Read or Akeson
VDV or Rosehill-Hall-Rinaldo

Coburn-Streit
Gustafsson-Schenn
Lauridsen-Alt
Gill

Mason
Emery

Take the lottery pick and the acquired picks and use some of that to try and land one good dman. Sign another solid depth dman with mobility in free agency. Add Laughton and one solid free agent winger and continue to build from within.

Thoughts?

Well, he has to be over 35. And we need to trade for his rights and bargain against ourselves before signing him.

I'm not sure Lauridsen and Alt are ready for ful-time NHL duty. They may be, but if we're going to tank (which is what I think you're proposing), I'd rather not have our 2 best (current) young pro defenseman in that situation.

I offered Holmgren's dented bike, Clarke's false teeth, Rosehill, and the future considerations of Ed Snider's next wife to Nashville for Weber but for some reason, Poile won't return my calls.

Well, Lauridsen isn't that young and is probably ready for another look. Plus giving them each 14-15 minutes on the 3rd pair isn't exactly throwing them to the wolves.

He was slated to start tonight but because of the rescheduled game that was last night, Emery gets the nod.

Don't think Mason nor Emery has played a back to back game this season (correct me if I'm wrong).

He's 25 he can handle it, im sure he's not too happy about it (i wouldn't) but maybe that's why he's a pro and im not

No, he's not young, but he's only a second-year pro. Alt's in his first season. If they're gonna throw away the season (which I think is a terrible idea for a number of reasons, but let's go with it anyway), why not just keep Gill and Gustafsson as your 3rd pair? Then, let Alt and Lauridsen compete out of camp next season. That way, they'll get more playing time in the AHL, can work of refining their games at that level, and maybe even get some playoff games.

I dont usually encourage others to read anything by Frank "the skank" Seravalli, but this is actually pretty good work.. A very tough read to be honest. Frank explain the story of Wellwoods HORRIFIC injury and his progress and set backs since..

Yeah no doubt I'd like to see him in net instead. I'm sure he would have some motivation to get a win in his old arena.

Regarding Alt, I agree, I didn't realize how little pro experience he has. However Lauridsen is in his 3rd season with the Phantoms not his 2nd so I'm not sure how finishing the season with the big club would hurt his development at this point.

Also I wouldn't mind another look at Brandon Manning.

i know someone mentioned Johny Gudreau a few days ago...Could the flyers pick him up ala Schultz this summer? Might add some skill to the phantoms and the who knows.

So you either think they are contending this year or that VL and Grossmann will be key guys when their young dmen start to develop sometime around 2016 or 17?
