Exlund - I too would love to see Alt get at least a cup of coffee up with the Flyers this season but I really don't see that happening unless a slew of our D go down with injuries. Gutsy can't even get back into the lineup.

The reason it seems like a big deal is team chemistry. Without it, the team is finished, and since they play on the same line, it warrants some clarification. Unless, I have a smile on my face, saying F U to someone means I'm pis*ed off!

My apologies to the individuals above. My sarcasm meter didn't go off!
My bad......

Must be the frustration from watching this mediocre team with the most expensive defense in the league!!

I hope they don't get blown out tonight by a hot CBJ team. I am still surprised about the lack of effort last game for 2 periods at home vs a team they need to beat to make the playoffs.

Well, Lauridsen isn't that young and is probably ready for another look. Plus giving them each 14-15 minutes on the 3rd pair isn't exactly throwing them to the wolves.
- BiggE

That's what I'd do -- no sense drafting these young players if we're never going to throw them out there and see if they can hack it.

Alt's a 2010 draftee, Lauridsen's an older 2009 pick -- it's not going to get any easier.

2016's a worthy goal to rebuild the defense, but if the Flyers are going to struggle next year defensively, let it be with players with a future, not players with a past

No, he's not young, but he's only a second-year pro. Alt's in his first season. If they're gonna throw away the season (which I think is a terrible idea for a number of reasons, but let's go with it anyway), why not just keep Gill and Gustafsson as your 3rd pair? Then, let Alt and Lauridsen compete out of camp next season. That way, they'll get more playing time in the AHL, can work of refining their games at that level, and maybe even get some playoff games.
- jmatchett383

Putting aside the tanking of the season discussion, my answer to the question in bold would be because then you don't really know what you've got in the players in the AHL. The whole point of bringing them up is to see how they perform competing against the best players in the world. Sooner or later, it's trial by fire for all aspiring pro athletes.

See, that's what will make me absolutely sour next season.

I had absolutely no problems with them trying to throw money at Ryan Suter and throwing money and draft picks at Shea Weber. I get that and am not bitter at all that it didn't work.

I also understand, if you thought Luke Schenn and Nicklas Grossmann would play better, why you brought in Mark Streit: Because you thought you underachieved last year and you think, in Kimmo Timonen's last year, you only need one more puck mover.

But there's no way in hell I'm going to understand if, next year, you're looking for Timonen and Meszaros' replacements from outside AND you don't throw a metric (frank)-ton of assets and picks at it to get the guy you want OR you don't play the young guys you have.

Because we already know the defense needs either an infusion of high-end talent or we need to develop it. Lauridsen will be in his fourth year with the Phantoms -- would he even still be waiver exempt? -- and Alt would have a full season under Terry Murray and would be 22/23 years old.

One or both has to be able to carry the ball for 60 or so games next year -- I mean, seriously. Has anybody seriously looked at how badly each of the defensemen we currently have has played this year? It would be pretty damn difficult to look as bad as Nicklas Grossmann has looked the last few weeks, or how Meszaros and Timonen looked at the start, or how Streit looked for a segment.

How the eff would Lauridsen or Alt look worse than that, on any given night?

Kinda like the new lines. VL needs to play center and I think Read-Couturier-Hartnell could click. While its not ideal, I think Schenn will be more effective on the wing than VL. Its worth a try
