I think the Stralman issue is pretty clear cut actually. It will take, IMO, a minimum of three years/$9 million to re-sign him. I think they are going to re-sign Girardi around the $5.5 million mark long term, so if they do that, and re-sign Stralman to something similar to the term above, that gives you three right handed shots tied in long term, which is not good news for Dylan McIlrath.

I think it is 50/50 Stralman's back next year. I think the Rangers will be interested in bringing him back, but I don't think they will overpay.

Yeah Pete, I'm thinking he is pretty much gone, he was just one of those players who wasn't flashy, never stuck out, but he was so damn consistent. Like Tom has mentioned someone is probably going to offer him a decent amount of money, more than we will be able to afford after G & Cally. But it does open a spot for Allen, and i think he would probably be the closest right now to making the transition.

Can't over think the draft. Just take the best player.

I forgot what the reasoning was for him dropping?

People thought that he was soft and didn't have enough Jam. Personally, I think it is was more because the Spitfires had won two straight Memorial Cups, the scouts saw a ton of him, and they started to nitpick his deficiencies. Moreover, there was a run on forwards because of the team needs. That was the year that the Islanders took Nino I believe, and I actually thought they would take Fowler when he dropped to them at 5 or 6 (whenever they were drafting that year).

They actually passed on him as well, interestingly enough. Granted it was 4 or 5 picks earlier.

That was the Neiderieter(sp?) pick right? At least at the time that was excusable.

Agreed on that. I woulda done the same based on the scouting reports. But our blunder is inexcusable.

I actually would have taken Fowler if I were the Islanders, but yeah, it was much closer call. With McIlrath, the Rangers braintrust fell in love with the guy, and when Fowler fell, I don't even think they thought about potentially adjusting. They had settled on their guy, and they were going to take him.

Strlaman and Niskanen are going to get monster contracts. Depending on who the Rangers re-sign, Girardi or Stralman. I can see on of these 3 going to Detroit. Detroit has 1 RHS and like 40 LHS. Niskanen Girardi or Stralman will be a Wing.

Which to me, is horrible management. You need to be able to adjust.

That, and I think the Fowler is soft thing took hold. Alot of teams passed on him for that reason.

as I wrote in blog: "For MDZ, he likely will be paired with Seth Jones on the second pairing in Nashville, seeing second pairing PP time while playing in a similar defensive oriented system to how the Rangers used to play, where preventing goals was the first focus."
- airjan23

Wouldnt be surprised to see him get some 1st unit pp time if he does well

I was shocked at how Fowler fell. I wanted him but figured there had to be a very BIG reason why he fell like he did. I was obviously very wrong in that assumption

Never understood the whole Nino thing after he was drafted. Was it the coaching? Was it him? He has the size and skill, just never seemed to get a chance with the Islanders. He has 26 pts this year is a plus 10. Not to bad.

“better overall group, 3 pairs, right hander/left hander, people in their natural positions. I think that will help Johnny Moore. He is more comfortable on the left and it will give our D core a much better look in my estimation. We will find that out tonight.”

Nino had a concussion problem during his first year and I think he and the team differed on how it was handled and the relationship never got over it

I think it was a combination of the two with more of the fault being with Snow and company. After he didn't get a camp invite I figured it had escalated to the point of no return and then his agent went public with those comments. Messy situation. I for one was excited about him playing for us. Could have been the power forward we all wanted on JT's wing and the assets we used on Vanek could have been used on D.

Coaches do fall in love with the 3 RH/3 LH shots thing, and he had two guys on the third pair that both liked to play on their natural side. Basically, the Rangers chose Moore over Del Zotto with this trade. And, again, the trade is probably not a good sign for McIlrath either.

definitely true, and definitely gives you a clear indication what they think of McIlrath now if they do that
- jimbro83

I think it gives them protection in the event Stralman seeks more money than what the Rangers are willing to offer. I still see McIlrath as someone the organization thinks can be a steady defender and a force physically. Of course the injuries aren't helping any and I can understand the impatience.

It had more to do with him getting four minutes a night and playing with Pandalfo and Reasoner. Kid wasn't ready and didn't have a chance. the only reason he played that first year was so his salary counted against the cap so we could reach the floor. Snow had ridiculous bonus clauses in his contract that he would never reach that counted against the cap. Then Capuano played him in situations so he could never reach those clauses. The following season he played in the AHL and played pretty good and didn't get a camp invite, that was it. It was a ridiculous situation which furthered my hate for the managament of this team.

That was a bad trade, Clutterbuck & 3rd for Nino, but I guess with everybody being disgruntled about the situation, he wasn't going to get fair trade value for him.
