Goon is very much a hockey term. I'm not sure it has as much to do with race as it does with the fact that hockey has it's own distinct terminology.

Ya, I don't think of thug as race either, like if I were to go and rob old ladies and break people's bones for owing me money, i'd be a Thug.
If I just like to fight and make people miserable for the sake of being tough, i'd be a goon!

Exactly. And thug...the guy went to Stanford! And is seemingly very smart....how the hell does it get the most media citings in over 3 years for being passionate? I do think it is subliminal racism on the part of the media, just feel it is unfortunate this (see comments in my link) will breed stupidity from ppl ignorant on the game of hockey. I like the term Goon and last I checked Sherman was at most (depending on if you are a 49ers fan) a villain. To me, it was just a flashback to 1991 Ultimate Warrior.

And the guy didn't say anything wrong... he didn't swear, he didn't lie. Everything he said is true. There was a lot of talk prior to the game about how the 49ers and Crabtree weren't afraid of him. Then all game long they avoided throwing to his side. On the last play of the game they challenged him and he smacked them down for it.

Then, 30 seconds later a reporter gets in his face and he's fired up. It's maybe not the most sportsmanlike thing in the world to tell it like it is in that instance, but it's definitely not "thuggish".

Reporters should be calling him a bad winner, or a loud-mouth, or a spoil-sport, or a bad example of sportsmanship for kids everywhere. All of these would be fine, but the word "thug" is just completely irrelevant to the discussion, and I do agree that it wouldn't even be in the mix if Sherman were white.

Calling the Flames and Canucks thugs is also ridiculous. Sherman's not making the point he should be making with that comparison.

Yeah, but based on all the hate he got on twitter and from media....I think it was a stand up way to respond vs pulling the race card. While not a good analogy, I kind of understand what he was going for. The bigger concern is the narrative this creates from the ignorant non-hockey fans not understanding the place policing the game has. And using it as yet another linchpin an endless futile narrative of banning fighting.

I do feel bad for the guy though. A lot of internet tough guys out there. Maybe they are the thugs.

Maybe I'm missing something but what the heck does race have to do with the word thug?

Because: it is not typically designated on white people, rap sometimes used 'thug life' as a euphemism for 'hood' culture, and the media apparently failed to look up the proper definition.

You are correct in that its literal meaning has nothing to do with race. when idiots brand people thugs lacking context, it becomes a subliminal racist word. Shouting on a tv has as much to do with thug life as hockey has to do with soccer.

Well I don't care how educated Sherman is, he sounded like a fcking idiot after the game. I'm so sick of people instantly playing the race card when something is said about someone who isn't white.

Gangsters?
Normally I agree on the race card deal. However, he didn't pull the card even after all the vitriolic hate he got online (not inclusove of the pundits using thug ect). In this isolated incident, there is a point to be made.

Gangsters=Thugs. They can be white, black, yellow, red or purple.

And far as the hate he got maybe he should look in the mirror and remember how he acts on the field. Great player but a fcking donk.

Why is Stempniak so awful now? He breaks up every good rush. Should be playing on the 4th line.

No kidding, the guy touches the puck and bad things happen. He either gives it away, falls down or shoots it into a defender. Really struggling.

So is gangster a racial word for white thugs? The whole conversation is blown so out of proportion. There are always going to be stereotypes, that's just the world we live in.

Stempniak's playing like he has no confidence.
