Your argument that Orr being simply in the vicinity of the ice thus teams are afraid to hit hard and throw hits on talented players is the same irrationality that purports that if the teachers at Newton had guns they would have prevented the shooter from shooting the place up.
- AdamFrench

I'd think twice about it if they had guns.

well.. the majority of NHL coaches tend to lean towards my opinion

so argue all you want.. there is validity to what i am saying.

- Dozzer

Non=functional toughness, the goon, is an endangered species. Just last night Gazdic showed exactly how useful he is if the other player refuses to drop the gloves. Guys like Orr and Macleran show it on a regular basis as well.

if that was the case... you'd think every team would have gotten rid of their Orr's by now considering what Chicago has accomplished.

i would also say that yeah, the sabres are a better team when miller is worried about being run over....

dont ya know.. HB posters know more than NHL coaches.

- Dozzer

You think Lucic would hesitate to run over Miller again?

Seriously?

scott's job is to protect miller

stop trying to muddy the waters .. stay on topic

sorry if you cant make your point doing so

- Dozzer

I was on topic.

You asked if Lucic has run Miller since....obviously inferring that he hasn't because of Scott.

I countered that he hasn't run any other goalies since. Pretty sure it was easy to see my point...you know...through those muddy waters and all.

he did only play 4.. he was put into the lineup whenever the other team started to take liberties

he would go in for a game, calm things down, and then be taken back out again.

used sparingly.. but still used for precisely the role i am talking about.

Final four last year.

Not Chicago.
Boston has Thorton but he can play a bit.
Pens...nope.
Kings....nope.

- stormeyAlterEgo

By the time you are in the Semis - giving up a single power play has the potential cost you a game, there's no need for a guy like Orr. Carlyle probably wouldn't have been playing his enforcers against those teams either. But in the regular season and even against the Bruins in the playoffs, you need some muscle and there's still a place for those guys in the league.

The deterrent would be the risk of retribution on Rask I would think. Lucic probably got crap from the coaching staff for that hit.

Every team would love a Lucic, or even a Clarkson (at less salary).

Tough guys that can play. Orr is a dinasaur now. Hockey is going back to the days when guys like Jonathon, O'reilly and even Dave Schultz could score goals.

Lucic isn't scared of anyone in the league lol if he does actually hesitate it's because he's more afraid of the suspension than he is of Scott.

How exactly was I being childish?

You asked me to make my point...I thought it was pretty clear what my point was.

BTW...I love toughness in hockey. Love fighting. But most of today's fighters have to be able to contribute in other aspects of the game. Orr cannot.

edit... dont think richardson is who i was thinking of.

point being... all the teams have a form of toughness that can be described as useless in certain opinions.
