He's been great since January. That second goal was an absolute snipe.

How often have we seen our defenseman besides Kimmo fake the slapper & go around fr the shot?

and this streak has come without power play time, he needs to get him on one of the units, maybe the first unit & pull Hartnell off

Streit will do it sometimes too. The other guys don't have the mobility or puck skills to do much with the puck though.

agreed, but not very often, I remember Streit trying to spin more often, or just a lateral dump.

I'm praying Mez continues this, if not a streak so much as staying healthy & carrying the puck & shooting with confidence, he was solid in the D zone as well last night.

It would be nice to get a boost from within instead having to move assets for 2 more guys to play on our back line

He was alright defensively. He had some nice plays. You can see he's brimming with confidence. He got out of position a couple of times which resulted in odd man rushes. That can be said almost every Flyer last night though.

This team needs to find more defensive consistency. They aren't playing very good teams right now. They can't rely on other teams playing poor defense and having bad goaltending.

I'll be honest, I'd rather see a 2-0 win in their next game than another 6-4 win.

I'm right with you on the lower scoring win, I don't see them getting into the playoffs if they don't tighten it up in their own zone on a consistent basis
The first 2 periods were ridiculous, the islanders first line had a field day creating & shooting, and the 3rd period is the way they need to play every game

It's impossible to sustain that play in the 3rd period. You can't outshoot teams 14-2 every period. They need to weather the storm when they aren't dominating play.

Against a team like the Islanders, they needed to pound their defense with a heavy forecheck. Not play the up and down game. Flyers, obviously, are not built to skate with faster teams.

I thought he was referring to the stress on their hearts...

Crazy game last night. Love Mesz's new-found confidence and Raffl's will to score a goal after coming so close several times the last couple games.

And I'm already regretting Mason's contract after last night's performance.

Will the Flyers never learn?

3 years at 4.1 million for Mason. This based on 44 games played for the Flyers.

This has disaster written all over it.

he won the calder trophy, played pretty well for the worst team in the league and lost his confidence. he has shown a lot of mental toughness to be able to come here, take some direction, develop his game, and has played way better, on a consistent basis between the pipes than anyone has in a long time here. of course there will be those who disagree with ANY move, but what was the alternative? he wasn't going to take 3 mil/yr and would have cost us a lot more later on.
what would have them do, if not this?

So going from giving goalie a 9 year deal to this one for a 3 year deal.........you don't think that's a lesson they learned?

Some observations from last night:

Yes the 3rd period was great, however that doesn't give them a pass for the first two! The effort, especially defensively, during the first 40 minutes of the game was pathetic and inexcusable. Comebacks are nice, but they are not sustainable in the long run and extremely difficult to pull off against good teams. Unless they start giving a 60 minute effort on a consistent basis, they have one and done written all over them when it comes to the playoffs.

Rosehill gets a lot of abuse on this site, much of it unwarranted as I feel he tries to fill his role to the best of his ability and what more can you ask of a player. Last night, I thought he picked an excellent time to fight and for a short while at least, it really seemed to give the team a lift.

I like the goalie switch. Mason was playing well and I'm sure that the coaching staff has made it very clear to him that the move had nothing do with his play. All I know is that they only gave up 5 shots in 26 minutes following the switch and completely dominated the Isles from then on.

I'm glad Berube seemed pissed after the game. I like the fact that just because they played well for 20 minutes and won the game, he isn't going to accept anything less than a 60 minute effort. In that respect, he reminds me a bit of Keenan. The difference being that unlike Keenan, he then doesn't go and throw whichever player he's mad at publicly under the bus.

Finally, it's one thing to let another coach's tactics get under your skin. Its another however to get so off your rocker that you try to confront him after a period in the other club's locker room. What Tortorella did last night was wholly unprofessional and he absolutely deserves both a fine and a suspension. The NHL cannot afford to tolerate that type of behavior.

I can't help but feel that they could have waited until the end of the year to commit. I am relieved with the reasonable $$$ and years tho

Then there isn't much to be upset about then. Have some faith. Mason has done a very good job with the team in front of him.

After a playoff series Mason wouldn't have come any cheaper.

perhaps they could have waited til the end of the year, but perhaps then a bit more money or a NMC would have been required to get this done?

all in all, I think it's a good deal for both sides, and I'm happy with the years, cash, timing ... and lack of a NMC.

I can live with the term but he hasn't earned 4.1 million yet.

I would have liked 2 years at about 2 to 2.5 & waited till the summer to see how the goalie market shacked down. I would have truely made him earn a better contract after 2 more full seasons. Not based on such a small sample size.

Mason has shown that when comfortable he cn be average at best. Maybe its a mental thing I don't know.

I also hope I'm wrong.

As for the Bryzgalov signing. I still hate it. That cost Philadelphia Richards & Carter but the return from moving them at least made those deals very positive for years to come.
