we'd take average goaltender stats...but any goalie playing behind our defense is gonna have a bad time.
andrew macdonald on his own turns the puck over every other shift and usually causes a minimum of a goal a game against...and then we get to matt carkner... - Isles_since_6
I'll take McDonald off your hands if he's THAT big of a burden |

Yeah, but he's alright once you get past his often outrageous opinions. |

Just read the blog and I have to disagree with you that Scrivens is too good to be a backup. In fact, that's exactly what he's been, a good backup. That's not to say that he can't be a starter, or he's not ready to start, it just means that no one really knows yet. The one thing we can say is that he's better than Dubnyk so that's a positive. I just hope that Edmonton doesn't offer him an extension too soon. Give it the rest of the season and see how he fares. If he's not up to the task they can easily cut bait and go after a UFA. If it turns out he is what they hope he is, they've probably already got a leg up on resigning him because he's a local guy. I don't think by waiting there's a lot of risk in losing him. |

i love hockeybuzz.
no grey area.
either we ALL as a fan base thought dubnyk was the greatest and gonna lead us to multiple titles and we wouldnt trade him for quick
or
we all thought he was the worst ever, and he shoulda been ditched long ago and was never good for anything.
no in between. |

We''ll wait and see. The way I see it, he's at least a solid 1B option with some potential for upside. |

Yeah, it's no coincidence that the Islanders and Oilers both need goalies yet both have 2 of the worst defensemen groups in the entire league. |

I hear all of you who point out that Scrivens MAY not be a starter. I am not blind to the fact that this has been Scrivens' best season ever and he may regress.
That said, he was cheap and a better gamble than Dubnyk. He cost nearly nothing of actual value and the Oil get to test drive him for a bit before he will be offered a contract.
If he fails in Edmonton then the club can still try to address their issue via Free Agency, which it seems was always going to be the case. |

ull have to leave hockeybuzz to see it.

no way you can see some positives of a player while conceding the negatives. it's just not possible...
"what?? You think dubnyk had a reasonable contract and coulda been the guy going forward due to his solid stats last year!!??"
"so what you're trying to say is he's better than pekka rinne!!?? you oiler fans. such homers!!" |

Great moves. Always liked Scrivens and buddy is high if he thinks 1.85M a year is a "hefty price tag". What is this, 1982? |

agree 100%. Like I said, it's just a hunch but I think the big picture Mac-T has in mind is to extend Scrivens as a backup if he plays well and hunt for a proven starter in the meantime. If he plays out of his mind, well that works too. Either way, Dubnyk is gone <3 |

Scrivens numbers will get worse playing in Edmonton.
Dubynk's numbers will improve playing in Nashville.
A goalie does rely on the team to play defense in front of him. And their numbers reflect that.
To call Dub a terrible goalie, after what the Oilers have done this year is pretty lame Matt.

How do you judge failure on a team that struggles defensively?
Look at Toronto, Reimer and Bernier are their best players this year, but their numbers look horrible. |

Ive seen almost every game he's played in the NHL. I assure you, he is a terrible goalie. |
