I find myself thinking back to the close of the regular season last year and a debate i was having with oiler fans on HB about the goalie situation in Edm. A rumor then was Ryan Miller to Edm.(though prob. never realistic) and i was shocked by the praise most fans bestowed on DD, even to the point that he was being compared to and Better than Miller.

I'm not trying to be a D#%K but how did you guys not see this coming last year, especially with an unproven D infront of him?

- nikel

Because fans like to try to be optimistic about one of their young goaltenders actually turning out?

Nope sorry. Even I could post great numbers behind the Kings D.

I'll be sure to inform Jonathan Quick that he is a poor goalie in lieu of the fact that his sv% is that much worse than Scrivens in front of the same D

Jonathan Quick has a .914 behind the same defense. What do you extrapolate from that? Based on your line of thinking then surely on the Oilers Quick would be ECHL caliber if he could only muster a .914 with the Kings.
- Matt_Henderson

Come on man. Back up's in LA put up ridiculous numbers. Period, they like any other team tighten up when Quick is out, Scrivens, Jones, Bernier all put up great numbers behind that team. It's not a coincidence

I think Edmonton legitimately values what Hendricks brings and they needed Dubnyk gone quick to make room for Scrivens. If the Scrivens deal didn't also happen at the same time then I think your questions are totally legit, but in context the Oil saw a chance to upgrade in net AND add size/toughness.
- Matt_Henderson

If Hendricks is someone they legitimately wanted then I guess I see it. I think that's too much for a 4th liner but, like I said earlier, it's not so much that it's really worth worrying about. I just think that Edmonton did a lot more for Nashville than Nashville did for Edmonton and they should have gotten a low pick with Hendricks. At the end of the day, when you're talking about $2M players and low round picks I guess it's really not a big deal either way.

I'm not exactly sold on Scrivens either but they paid a low price for him and they made the trade early enough to get a decent read on what they have before going into the summer. That's a trade I like.

So the Kings played tight in front of Scrivens for well over a month while Quick was hurt?

Dubnyk was interesting in that way. He polarized the fanbase, and half the fans loved him (even into his stinker of a season this year) and half of them thought he was terrible. I think part of the reason he had such die hard fans in Edmonton was because he was drafted and developed by the oilers, so people didn't want to give up on him.

Personally I had no faith in him back when it was the Dubnyk and Dellauriette (or however the (frank) you spell his name) debate. Thought both guys were garbage and the oilers should cut their losses, but a lot of homers felt otherwise.

this.

it makes for a better 'i told you so' when it doesnt work out. but it's not like all oiler fans totally overestimated dubnyk.

he had strong numbers last year as his first year as starter behind a brutal defence. one that mightve been even worse than this years.
he was signed short term and cheap and had devloped every year. albeit marginally and slowly, but nonetheless.

to have some faith that dubs might be the guy going forward instead of selling the farm for someone who might only ne marginally better doesnt show too much homerism if you ask me.
but maybe a tad bit too much optimism instead

I'm a little worried who we're going to blame for sucking now that Dubnyk's gone...

Yes, without a doubt. Not to mention it's pretty well known that Quick is having quite the off season from what they expect.

I'm not going to sit here and bash the trades made today because I don't believe the Oilers lost anything by doing this. However if you think that Scrivens incredibly good SV% will not take a big hit in EDM I think you are kidding yourself. With the sample size that's available I don't think you can definitively say he's better than what you had. IMO they are taking a shot on someone knowing Dubnyk wasn't in the future plans

Dunbyk probably needed a change, he has the ability to be a decent goalie, but clearly he was struggling mentally. Scrivens doesn't have to be amazing for the Oilers for them to consider it an upgrade, hell even an average goaltender(in terms of sv%) this year would have been nice for them.
- Nucker101

we'd take average goaltender stats...but any goalie playing behind our defense is gonna have a bad time.

andrew macdonald on his own turns the puck over every other shift and usually causes a minimum of a goal a game against...and then we get to matt carkner...

I like Scrivens, but not sure he can ever be a true #1. I think it was time for a shake-up in net for the Oilers though, so not a bad move.

Matt Henderson - hey I loved the article. Finally finally finally someone calls a spade a spade. Sorry Oil fans- the 80's are O..V..E...R. Once you get your head around that then the team will progress and with Scrivens and a little muscle thrown in - just what the Dr ordered for this club. Again - excellent article

Scrivens' sample size vs. Quick's playing for the Kings slightly skews your point of view. I've seen Scrivens play plenty and while he's not a bad goalie, he won't carry a team throughout a season. But hey, he seems like a pretty nice guy and he's really smart too like Ken Dryden. I hope Scrivens proves me wrong and turns out to be great for your team but I have my doubts.

Scriv wasn't good enough to be a leaf that should tell you something.

I don't think the oilers traded for him with the intention of him being a #1. It's a gamble to see if he can play his way to a contract as a backup. Oilers will probably still shop for proven starter. At least that's what I'd do if I was GM.

So, once we Oilers fans (we all believed to have no bearing on the team) "get our heads" around this point, the team will immediately start to succeed? WOW! I wish we knew this 7 years ago!
