I just saw Edmonton is retaining salary? This trade is a tough pill to swallow for Oilers fans imo.

Oy and Vey.

Rumor is that they're close to acquiring another goalie.

the bubble is going to burst on this team...if they cant manhandle the last place team when they are in a playoff hunt they arent going to beat the upcoming opponents.
- PhillaBully

I think that's a harsh reality. But that's what a middling team does - win some and get your hopes up and then lose some bringing you back down to earth.

The Bruins are an elite team because of both Chara and Bergeron (and a great supporting cast).

Why trade our Bergeron for a Chara? They need both.

*this is just an example of my thought process

i've been thinking about the constant thread in here about potential player moves, particularly on defense and it occurred to me that i'm really no longer emotionally attached to any of the players - even the best ones. if they were to somehow miraculously win the cup how would i "feel" about the team, now and for the long run? the last team i truly felt connected to was the 03-04 team. and that bums me out. don't get me wrong, i've been waiting my whole life for a cup...but i want to love the team also.

carry on....

- hammarby31

Oh you poor kid. Not trying to rub it in, but it's pretty dang fun when your team wins the Cup. Granted, I was in elementary school when they last did it, but I think were they to do it again in my lifetime I'd have just as much fun with it.

You do realize that Crosby is better that Lindros, right? By a healthy margin. And that's before you even take into account how he's elevated his team by bringing out the very best in guys like Dupuis, Kunitz, Colby Armstrong, etc.

(btw, I realize I just lost my membership card)

i'm no kid. i'm 41 years old and have been watching the flyers since 1980. i was 2 and 3 years old when they won. doesn't count for me. i'd be beyond happy, believe me, but i don't relate the same way to the players anymore. i'm sure that's a combination of being older than they are, and the fundamental change in the league with respect to money, contracts, and player movement.

Trading a 4th liner with a pretty bad contract for a young, NHL quality goalie? Oh my. Despite his poor season so far, I think this is a great trade for Nashville.

See, we do agree on quite a few things -- Lindros is in the same breath at those guys.

Lemieux's the best player who ever played. I don't mind saying it. It's just true.

- AllInForFlyers

Sorry best player I ever saw was Bobby Orr, Mario and Wayne were close but Orr played the game at a completely different level than any of his contemporaries and more amazingly, he did it on 2 bad knees!

Sidney's a whiny little B, no argument there, but on the spectrum of universally loved to universally despised, he sits a lot closer to the former than 88 ever will.

If I were starting a team from scratch, 88 wouldn't even be the first Flyer I would pick... I wouldn't hesitate to take Clarke over him, if the expressed intent was to elevate teammates and win a Cup.

88 was a great player... but he was self-serving and self-congratulatory to a fault, and that doesn't equate to success.

Lindros was twice the player crosby is. Crosby is a great scorer but eric dominated the game in ways few evsr did. Fwiw mario to me was the best to ever play.

I understand completely.

I've often wondered (but not cared enough to check on it myself) if my remembering that players seemed to stick with one team much more frequently back in the day as compared to now is a reality or simply my waxing sentimental for the good old days. My gut tells me that it's probably a little of both in that there were more "whole career with one team" guys than there are now but that there was actually quite a bit of player movement back then, too.

That's generally my thinking, too, of players I actually saw play. Orr would be second, I think.

i've never seen any stats on this issue, but i suspect player movement is significantly higher post-big money, which started in the 90s i guess. it's harder to move players now with the cap but players seem more like mercenaries now when they have the freedom to move to another team or are negotiating a new deal. i guess the issue is that it's impossible to separate the cap, money and contracts from discussion of the game itself and just (frank)ing hate that.
