The technology growth rate is speeding up faster and faster all the time.

Once these scientists prove to big industry that it's feasible and there are profits to be made... Money will pour into research and development.

Hell.. Just 20 years ago mobile phones we're these massive pieces of plastic that only the rich had... A laptop? Unthinkable.

- Dozzer

I think its a ridiculous idea... the costs would be astronomical!!!

We cant even mine under the ocean, or the roughest terrains on earth, let alone an astroid wizzing through space?

Sci-fi fantasy right now

So we can mine them for stuff that's already in the ground, to be efficient.

Yes.. Because industry pollutes and hurts the human race.

Would you weld in your livingroom? Why make our habitat the home of industry as well? Out of necessity and that's it. When it's no longer necessary it won't happen anymore.

How long had it been since you used say.. A black and white tv? You can't even buy them anymore because our technology has advanced to the point where there are better options out there that are just as feasible financially.

Try baking beets on the BBQ like a baked potato. Just wrap in foil, place on the grill, once done let stand for five and peel back the skin. Cut them up and add pepper, salt and butter. Enjoy !!!
- MountAlbert

People have told me to try them like that on occasion. I'm just afraid of them. Thanks for the tip though.

Oh people will feel what it's like not to have stuff industry makes just as soon as the banking system finally dies.

Touché.. How many people did you know who owned one in the early 90s

I guess that's the core of my point.

My dad had one.. for business.

Lots of home computers then... remember windows 95??

I concede technology is improving at an exponential rate, but I just see space minning as something thats REALLY far off.

It won't.. There will be change and we won't like it but it won't.

That would be another benefit of celestial mining.. The abundance of resources would make what we have today look minuscule. Which would keep prices reasonable.

I bet we're mining off world before the banks go kaput

Why? We already have remote control vehicles on mars. What's stopping them from landing mining robotics and drilling? The only thing they need to figure out is how to get it back. The tech is available to get us there.

Wow.. Still on this huh?

Solar, wind, and water are all great energy sources.. But you can't build a tv or a computer with it. Petrol is needed.

Truth is.. The best option we have is to continually invest into research that involves mining celestial bodies... If we can get our resources from uninhabited worlds.. Then we won't have to pull it from the earth.

There are options.. And honestly.. They're not as far off as we think. Once it becomes fiscally viable to drill and mine in space.. Raping the earth will simply become unnecessary. I imagine we will see the beginnings of such industry within our lifetime.

- Dozzer

Drilling and mining in space at rate that is profitable and in large quantities, would be about 75 years away if not more

Our system is failing. Cities like Detroit are going bankrupt. The economies of America and Europe are having depression numbers, just now people are one well fare which didn't exist, so govs are debting themselves into oblivion. It's coming.

That team in canada says they have a time frame of ten to thirty years.

Commercially yes, you're right.. But we will live to see the exploratory tech imo

They say they have enough people to colonies mars signed up. They might be there in 20 years, maybe less. 75 years is possible.

In very small quantities. Drilling and mining is tough enough on earth, let alone space.
Aren't we suppose to be driving around in flying cars right now?

We will see the return of the elite and serfdom before western culture falls... And before that happens.. Revolution.

I think we're going to see some very very interesting times in our lives.

My guess is war. Eventually the rich will push things too far and a revolt will happen.

Cause you need to haul a hell of a lot of space rocks back to earth to make enough money to pay for the billions and billions and billions it would costs to get a space mine started.

Good luck getting an investor to sign up for that

Dozzer, have you ever worked on or been part of regular surface drilling projects? It's not as easy as you may think... you can't just fly a drill rig up to the moon and land it where ever you like, make hole and call it a day at 3000m's

Guys, I'm sort of getting my hopes up for that Oculus Rift. Maybe this is finally gonna be the one that brings VR home. Remember when Sega was working on theirs 20 years ago? Or the Virtual Boy? This Oculus uses the visuals from whatever it is your playing. Sounds cool.

Oh be fair.. The forecasts of today are based in proven science. Also, computers are doing the work now ... Not humans.

Also, they do have flying car tech, you are required to have a pilots license however.

Also, where is the money in flying cars? There's no market. Raw materials however.... Especially when we start to bleed the earth completely dry.
