Take in account that Talbot is under contract the next two years at a very cap friendly number. while Downie is a UFA after this season. Given his current level a play, I would want nothing to do with giving Downie a contract.

So essentially this trade is 3/4 of a season of Downie for 2.75 seasons of Talbot.

Downie is the better player.

Since there currently isn't a player truly deserving of being placed in the "scape-goat-a-meter"-- I would imagine Downie is the player-du-jour.

Keep in mind, just a few weeks ago, when Read-Couturier-Downie were paired together, that was the most consistent line shift-in shift out.

Talbot is a replaceable player. There is really no reason to get all bent out of shape regarding a 4th line (swing 3rd line) player like Talbot. Laughton will be ready in 1-2 years for that role, or some other interchangeable part in UFA next season.

Look to the Jets now with the firing of Noel as more of a possible trade partner.

Cheveldayoff still has time, but will be on the hot seat next. There are some decent pieces in the pipeline, but with the Scheifele pick being question more and more each day pressure looms.

This is essentially the same team that left Atlanta, and while it may not be the most attractive FA destination, making no moves will end up being a kiss of death.

My thing with Downie from the start is he currently makes 2.65 million a year. He will be looking for a raise next season, and probably a multi-year contract.

I'm not too keen on him.

Fair points. I don't disagree. If a trade is made and one guy stays healthy, and the other doesn't, guess what, that means the trade didn't work.
- PLindbergh31

Perhaps the trade hasn't worked out as the Flyers had hoped for now, but there is a lot of games left to be played. Before he went down with the concussion, he was playing fairly well. Since then, not so well.

Coincidence?

Downie may be able to get his "issues" worked out and may become productive again. I haven't written off the trade as a bust as of yet.

Another thing the Flyers should be looking for is a 4th line center. There's some nice names that might be available at the trade deadline. Bolland, Stajan, Moore, Ott, Fiddler, Goc, Malholtra, etc etc. I'm not a big fan of Hall or Vandlevele. Any of those guys listed would be a huge upgrade. Hopefully they can rent one for the rest of the year and until Laughton gets that spot next year.

Cap estimated to grow from 64 to 71 next year. I am not saying that he is my top priority--B.Schenn and Mason get first contracts.

But I am not sold that he will get a substantial raise with his injury and suspension history. And I would be okay if he were in the sub-$3million / year ballpark.

But keep in mind, his contract expires--so if negotiations get out of hand with Mason and/or B. Schenn, there is no commitment, unlike with Talbot (or someone else) whom we would have to trade.

If that's the case at the end of the year, and he hasn't stepped out of this funk he's seemingly in, then adios.

But it's too early to speculate.

I completely agree with Moose.
Downie energized the Couts line, which took some pressure off G and Jake.
Then Downie gets hurt, lines shuffled, and here we are.
I like Talbot, but the Flyers did well in that trade.

Interesting that Downie is being sat, but I don't have a real problem with it. I think it also sends a message to the team that after a sub par performance, players will be held accountable for not working hard enough. McGinn was solid yesterday I thought, so no issue.

I also don't believe the trade for Downie turned the season around as much as Berube's system taking hold.. Having said that, I am still good with the trade, and the PK certainly has not suffered with the personnel change.. it seems to be better.
