There's also the fact that this season the Leafs have won most of the games they've given up 40+ shots, and lost most of the games they've given up <30. - 1979AD
On a single-game basis, teams are out-shot at EV and win quite a bit (the opposite, obviously, also holds true). That's because teams that take leads in hockey games tend to shoot less, and teams that trail in hockey games tend to shoot more. There's like a three to five percentage point swing when that stuff happens.
What you noted is exactly why it's better to look at score-close numbers, because score effects play such a big role in this stuff.
You'll notice this isn't exclusive to just Toronto. The Blues have been generally out-shot over the last few weeks because, so many times, they've taken big/early leads in games and tend to sit on them, letting the other team attack more. Their "close" numbers, of course, still exhibit relative dominance. |
