McClement belongs on the 4th line, but Carlyle is too committed to his vision of old school, shutdown hockey.
He sees his bottom six as defensive types, but you just can't do that with the team we have. We're not built to play the classic trap style from the 90s. - Leeman4Gilmour

Sounds like Moneyball, and I do really love that movie. I could be swayed. - Bigzby
Moneyball is great. And advanced stats in baseball are a revelation and very useful for evaluating players.
The problem is - just like with Corsi - it's not a slam dunk; there are many unmeasurable variables that make players effective and teams good.
Beane and Oakland went 100% sabremetrics, and althrough they've been able to consistently field competitive teams with small payrolls, they've never won or made it to the WS.
Teams like Boston, that greatly value sabremetrics, but don't discredit their scouts opinions and gut feelings dominate. |

You've got to get all four lines attacking. We're a counter-punch team, not a Nashville.
I just sick watching this team try to play ultra-conservative hockey, waiting for teams to take the play to us. They're just picking us apart.
Fraser starting over Gardiner is the ultimate sign of what Carlyle believes this team should be. He's dead wrong. We're only going to win with speed and an aggressive forecheck.
I've lost count of how many times in a game that they just dump the puck in and peel off for a line change, or maybe send in one ineffective forechecker. It's just a turnover by a different name. |

do you know why that is? it's because Boston can afford to follow traditional evaluation methods. they have about $100 million more budgeted for player salaries. Oakland has no choice but to go dumpster diving.
i have never heard a single advocate of advanced hockey stats state anything about Corsi be an absolute. it's simply saying "if you're possession stats are good, chances are you'll have success. if they're bad, chances are you won't have success." that's it. that's the whole thing. |

I don't get why some people are so opposed to owners investing profits in the product they sell.
Would you rather they just cheap out and pocket all that revenue? They're giving the fans what they want. |

Boston went from worst to first this year after dumping almost $50 mill in salary on two players with excellent advanced stats.

Corsi is a stat, and like any stat, looking at it and nothing else is stupid. You need context. With context, even +/- is useful. |
