So I'm taking this from a guy who posted this in Reddit:

We don't need to trade. We don't need to send down players. We don't need to sit Gards for Ranger Danger.

What we need is this- Actually, I'll quote Yahoo Sports for this part:

We average 36.4 shots against us this year, which is the highest since the 2005 lockout. If it holds, we get that record.

Why are we playing McClement 18 minutes a night? I like the guy, but he is a 3rd or 4th liner and a penalty killer. That's it. Why did we send Holland down and have Ashton take a draw? The (frank)?

We have this whole, "Wrap the puck around the boards out of the D-Zone or chip it off the glass, if a forward gets the puck dump it deep and change because you're already tired from playing too much in your own end," system going on.

It's (frank)ing failing. We're a disgrace.

Just came back...missed part of the conversation.

But I was thinking...all this talk about 'carlyle's system'...can someone explain to me what 'carlyle's system' is?

Because outside of good defensive zone coverage, and a tenacious forecheck....i can't think of anything else.

And if those are two of the key components...then this 'players don't suite his system' excuse isn't good enough.

if by good defensive zone coverage you mean let the opposition cycle relentlessly and by tenacious forecheck you mean dump the puck in deep, skate into the corner and throw a body check, then turn back and get into your immobile defensive zone coverage again then yes.. i cant fathom what might be wrong

Carlyle's system simplified.

Defensive coverage.
1. Allow the opposing player to go into the corner first. Then try to pin him to the boards. While holding him against the boards, our centre is to come down to help dig out the puck. Other D is to guard the front of the net, both wingers stay in the slot area.

2. If the puck comes loose and we have it, chip up the boards (never up the middle) to the winger who will move from slot coverage to the boards. When pressured, the winger will simply attempt to chip it up the boards past the D. (which normally doesn't happen)

3. If the puck comes loose and opposing team has it, collapse in front of the net and leave the D to chase the puck carrier.

problems with the system. It promotes giving the puck control to the opposing team in the zone. when the puck comes loose to the opposing team and the Leafs collapse, it leaves multiple options for puck movement on the boards and the points. Also, you will notice teams have started putting their winger and their D further down the boards, so when we chip it up the wall, they are usually able to keep it in the zone for sustained pressure. Finally, when the team comes away with the puck from a scrum, the D is often chasing the puck carrier as they used their body position to move along the boards. This is when D coverage should change, but it doesn't.

not for as long as we would have to watch him try and learn D.. and the silly little side to side weave he does when he skates.

I want to punch my tv when i see him do that.

I know that Gardiner induced feeling. For me it typically comes when he can make a quick sharp outlet pass to an open forward, but seems to freeze up and hesitate like running each possible option through his head and thinking about what Randy will say when he gets back to the bench. You can almost hear the gears in his brain grinding to a halt and almost smell the smoke coming out of his ears.... I imagine it smells like burnt toast.

Does McClements 18 minutes of ice time somehow relate to how many times the Leafs are killing a Penalty?

And the good Ol'Dump and change happens when teams get stuck in their own end for too long before they can get the puck and dump it.

Sounds like Martin Hockey

yup. He's a very good PKer, so he gets used a lot there, and with the absence of Bolland he's also taking the main shut-down duties.

Doubt it happens but if Carlyle got fired. WHo would be best suited for this sinking ship?
- Popcorn Kid

It would not shock me at all that IF they fire Carlyle, MLSE would offer the job to Wayne Gretzky right away. And things would probably go from bad to worse.

I think you're right.

McClement is just killing a heck of a lot of penalties and because Carlyle isn't playing the 4th line much Mclement has even more ice time.

Great work horse. Wish he had more skill to play a larger role

Change comes when Bolland's back. We don't have any other shut-down centers.

Maybe they should call up Gauthier.

nobody.

McClement's good, but not playing as much as he is. They should have found another bottom-6 center when he went down.
