When the Oilers miss again this year, won't that tie the Leafs record of consecutive misses?

They are both very conservative and patient. Sometimes it's a virtue, sometimes it's a burden.

Leafs need to start rolling their lines. Last year Bozak's line would come out, then Grabo's, then Kadri's. The 4th line even got to play about 10-12 mins a night which was fine because we were mostly in our opposition's end. Having McClement on the 4th also stabilizes that line making them less of a liability.

Things were going great this year when we would roll Bozak then Kadri then Bolland. Right now we should be rolling Bozak then Holland then Kadri, with Jay on the 4th line.

Randy is worrying way too much about having a true shut down line when it is clear we have been most successful with a balanced attack.

Carlyle still lives in the shutdown era. He still clings to outdated notions of defense and the New Jersey Devils glory years.

The NHL is all about counter-attacking these days. You need mobile defensemen who can skate with the puck with confidence, and not big, lumbering guys like Fraser with no discernible offensive instincts.

If we go in another direction, we need to take a shot on a guy with some revolutionary ideas on how to coach the game today. Go with a younger AHL type. Quit chasing the big names from a bygone era.

Yeah, pretty ridiculous. I say we shift coach from here on out. You can take the 1st shift, Username can take the 2nd. I'll probably have an aneurysm trying to give a speech like Tig in Goon, so I should go last..

I really don't like our defense. I really really don't

Phaneuf and Franson both are awkward morons with 0 hockey IQ and Randy doesn't seem like the best coach to get the most from Gards and Reilly.

Ranger is awful which goes without saying. Fraser hasn't been the same since his injury and Gunnerson is alright but doesn't play tough at all.

Not to mention this clarkson signing is turning into a debacle of epic proportions.

What is Nonis's direction for this team again? I'm confused.

It's just bizarre because our style of play has been a complete 360 from last year under the same guy.

Right now our top 2 lines get tired from the heavy minutes, we have a third line that just receives the game and a 4th that doesn't play. Time to go back to the balanced attack like we did last year and at the beginning of this year.

I'm not so sure, but if he brings a fresh perspective to the game, it's an upgrade.

Keenan, Crawford... these guys are just from a different time. They're re-treads. Stop shopping at the second hand store and find a new face.

Laviolette might be worth the only established NHL coach taking a look at. He's had success everywhere he goes, and even when he's gotten fired, the situation wasn't really that bad when he left.

He seems to have a more personal connection to the players than guys like Quinn, Wilson, or Carlyle. I think you need that in Toronto. You need a guy who builds relationships. Playing in Toronto is tough enough without having a coach who hates you.

Leafs were pretty Boston Bruin-esque last year and had a pretty good system in place that the players were buying into. Nonis went out and actually added a little more brawn to the lineup but got rid of some skill to do that. Yet the Leafs aren't nearly as tough as they were to play against as last year. Why? Because you cant play a good tough game when you're running around your own end. You need a balance of skill and toughness. And as I've said a bunch on this thread, they need to start rolling their lines again.

To me that is a reflection on the defence again. Our break outs are awful too lately.

Our forwards definitely aren't completely innocent either. They had 0 motivation tonight and seem to play that way on most nights.

I think that, as tough as we were last year, our real strength was in the speed/counter-attack game.

Montreal and Toronto both figured out how you play Boston last year. If you want to beat them, you beat them with speed. You take the play to them. If you get sucked into playing conservative, rope-a-dope hockey with them, you lose. They will hang back for 90% of the game, then beat you when it counts.

We lost last year to Boston because we stopped pushing offensively. We suddenly thought, "Okay, trap it up!" like we were the 2002 Devils. Doesn't work these days.

I see virtually none of that counter-punch hockey lately, despite finding success with it even this year. Carlyle wants to impose a style on this team that they aren't equipped for.

You can play Devils hockey if you have Scott Stevens and clutch-and-grab. Not Jake Gardiner and new rules on interference.

No question that our D has struggled but our forwards are having issues maintaining possession in the other team's zone. We just dump it in then receive. Or we lose the puck in the neutral zone, etc.

Defensively, yes.
Offensively, I gotta say Lupul-Kadri-Raymond played a pretty good game.
