Hell, even during the season.

He was a "player's coach" if ever there was one. He really cared and the players knew it.

It had its down sides too...hence why he was eventually fired...

- TouenneTiiTree

well, they all get fired.

Each coach has his way do to things. I always liked Demers for that though, he was a "rassembleur". It wasn't about X's and O's, or on ice strategies with him. He was a motivator.

All u had to do was keep Patrick Roy happy on that team.

And then they brought in a guy that didn't, the rest is history.

I just think most coaches have a short shelf life.... after 2-3 years players tune them out... And then there are teams like Pittsburgh where you have Malkin and Crosby and it really doesn't even matter who the coach is. Ditto SJS. (FFS Ron Wilson was there and they did well, or maybe it was that Leafs roster was just THAT bad)
- twiztedmike

the mediocre coaches have a short shelf life. the good ones stay put for long stretches, with the exception of Ken Hitchcock.

C'était sa chronique après le repêchage, c'est drôle de relire ses commentaires, qui pour la plupart se sont avérés erronés.

I don't think they need to be coodled as much as you think they do.

I think social media and 24/7ish shows has let us see behind the smoke and we know too much about the players now.

I think there are more premadonnas then there ever was, due to parents and everyone they know telling them that they are the next best thing, and this happens in every country.

There are more opportunity now for players and they don't have to work as hard to make it as they once did.

But overall, most players will still listen to a disciplining coach. The coach just needs to find the right threats to use.

I also don't think MT is as big of a hard ass and people think. He benches PK for 2mins and the media and fans go into a frenzy

- 2gals1dane

I agree with this...thank you for finding some common ground...although I'll say that I never said that the players need to be coddled...they just don't respond to threats like they use to...it might work for a bit...but then a coach loses the room...

And for the fellow who mentioned Tortorella...then wore out his welcome with players he had just won a cup...then he's worn out his welcome in another town without winning anything...and time will tell in Vancouver...

Coaches like that might get results, but they are not sustainable...

Absolutely right, but the league is full of mediocre coaches and the great ones are quite rare. And I'm not convinced Dan Bylsma is a good coach. It doesn't take a genius coach to figure out they should play Crosby or play Malkin for most minutes each night

right. his teams play at an intensity level that we don't really recognize in Montreal. it's exhausting just watching them. but i think you can only push a team physically for so long.

I don't believe that. I'm not saying they're as good as a team that can lock down the winning percentage they had in that 10 game streak, but they are better than the team that's gone .500 for the other 35.

There's no way they don't believe they can be better, either. The coach knows they can be better. The GM does. The team does too.

- EricEngels

So is it the player's sticks and skates that don't believe it??

I think its about respect from the players. Tortorella might have hockey smarts and is good about how to match up players... but his yelling and hard ass style gets old and loses the respect of players. Once the players lose respect, they don't buy into the coach's system and things fall apart. I think its happening to the Leafs. IMO once your team gets into a length slump you have to change the coach. You cannot recover, I don't think.

Him constantly hugging his players...and telling them he loves them wasn't enough for you to convince you he was buddy-buddy with them???

Listen, it's not one extreme or the other...there's plenty of room in the middle. The mike Keenan's of the world aren't coaching anymore and if they do, it's for a short time. Players see through a lot of the bullpoop coaches throw at them...they know what's going on...

- TouenneTiiTree

I don't remember that but at the time and being 11, i probably didn't care one bit what the coach was doing
