exactly

Therrien will get fired eventually, they all get fired.

I don't think it's anytime soon, the franchise needs stability.

- stinger67

A coach that is always in reaction mode doesn't offer much stability though...ie constant line shuffling, benching players all the time, etc.

I get accountability but you look at the big picture, not just each individual play which seems to me, to be the issue, based on what I am reading

Name a Coach that has won the cup that the players consider to be their friend
- 2gals1dane

Show me where I said the coach needs to be the player's friend.

Are you telling me that you disagree with my assertion that players have changed and don't react to coaching the same way they did in the past?

Really???

Yes. Quenneville re-enacts the Miracle on Ice speech before every game and between every period.

He actually does a few Kurt Russell movies. It all depends on the mood in the room. Like that 20-something game winning streak? Mostly Captain Ron scenes.

To be fair, Julien wasn't identified as "the guy" before he won the cup.

...and even then

He was a loss away from MTL from getting canned if I recall correctly.

At this point, I'm uneasy with Therrien, but not quite ready to toss him in the furnace. It is interesting to note, however, that this discussion (and many previous discussions) is quick to lay the blame at the coach's feet, but there's never any concern about Gionta's role in this. Shouldn't the captain bear some responsibility for motivating his team (and creating a buffer between coach and players)?
- elliedawg

I think it's safe to assume that every Habs fan has given up on Gionta and is just waiting for his contract to expire in July.

Even back then?

I don't remember him being a hard ass but i don't see him as being buddy buddy with the players either.

Well, keep him around so his midget elbow can hit goalies in the head and concuss them come playoff time

Oh no, Demers was always a notoriously player-friendly coach. Big time.

for sure. it's just that 1 year into a 4 year deal (lewis' deal), Chiarelli knew to fire the first coach he ever hired.

Leafs don't need goalies anymore. They have Jesus Clarkson.

I don't think I have ever seen as many players wanting to hug their coach after a cup win.

Him constantly hugging his players...and telling them he loves them wasn't enough for you to convince you he was buddy-buddy with them???

Listen, it's not one extreme or the other...there's plenty of room in the middle. The mike Keenan's of the world aren't coaching anymore and if they do, it's for a short time. Players see through a lot of the bullpoop coaches throw at them...they know what's going on...

Hell, even during the season.

He was a "player's coach" if ever there was one. He really cared and the players knew it.

It had its down sides too...hence why he was eventually fired...

Torts? He won a cup and got a ton out of that NYR team. Hell he's getting a ton out of an injury depleted team with only 3 top 6 forwards.

I don't think they need to be coodled as much as you think they do.

I think social media and 24/7ish shows has let us see behind the smoke and we know too much about the players now.

I think there are more premadonnas then there ever was, due to parents and everyone they know telling them that they are the next best thing, and this happens in every country.

There are more opportunity now for players and they don't have to work as hard to make it as they once did.

But overall, most players will still listen to a disciplining coach. The coach just needs to find the right threats to use.

I also don't think MT is as big of a hard ass and people think. He benches PK for 2mins and the media and fans go into a frenzy

I just think most coaches have a short shelf life.... after 2-3 years players tune them out... And then there are teams like Pittsburgh where you have Malkin and Crosby and it really doesn't even matter who the coach is. Ditto SJS. (FFS Ron Wilson was there and they did well, or maybe it was that Leafs roster was just THAT bad)
