Times have changed...the athletes have changed too...they don't respond to that...you can threaten them like they use to. Also, Bowman changed his style quite a bit as the players psyche changed...

It's not much different than the way we were taught in school and the way our kids are being taught in school today (or if you're too young, how you vs your parents).

Mike Keenan was the worst coach for being an ass. He gave his players the strap.

Do you think the Hawks need a pep talk before every game to get them motivated?
- 2gals1dane

Yes. Quenneville re-enacts the Miracle on Ice speech before every game and between every period.

He was fired in Montreal. Terrible coach.

exactly

Therrien will get fired eventually, they all get fired.

I don't think it's anytime soon, the franchise needs stability.

Yes and no. I'm not sure how many people would cite speed, skill, and possession as the strengths of any Habs team from 1998-2003, when guys like Savage, Zednik and Petrov were leading our team in scoring with 45 points.

But since the lockout, you're absolutely correct. Rightly or wrongly, every Habs GM since 2005 has strived to construct a lineup that values speed and skill over size and grit. Paradoxically, however, the team has tended to employ coaches (with the exception of Carbo) who value defense over offense.

All of that to say, I'm not really sure what your point of view is. Are you suggesting that the Habs would be better off playing MT & JM's defense-centric style of hockey? Because if so, that would call for a drastic change in personnel. Or would the team be better served finding a coach whose philosophy matches the skill-set of the kind of players that management regime after management regime seems so intent on icing?

Or do you even put this much thought into your argument at all?

Do you use a thesaurus when you write your posts?

Other then PK, Gallagher and Pacioretty does this team have any actual "speedy" Players, or is it the transition game when everything is clicking that makes it look like the team has speed?
- 2gals1dane

been saying this all year. this is a slow team. they labour up the ice and don't skate away from anyone. some fast guys, like you mentioned, but their overall speed is average and they play slow.

Interesting RT @FPTimCampbell Dustin Byfuglien in forward's jersey at #NHLJets practice today. #bn

I don't think he's going to make the trade deadline in Winnipeg.

He's been getting roasted a lot here.
I still love Buff.....but he's a hazard on D.

Incidentally, they tried him on forward for a few games last year...it was a disaster.

FYI, they'd be much better with a different coach behind the bench...

It was like that with Carbonneau, it was like that with Martin and it'S now like that with Therrien.

Somehow, it's never the collection of (frank)ing losers that are on the ice that is in question, but the coaching staff.

Totally agree...I'm not saying to hold their hands and sing...but I said it a few weeks back, when is Therrien going to realize that him being so hard on Subban (and the kids) is the equivalent of punching his ticket out of town?

Also, talking-heads keep bragging about how Therrien is calculating and everything he does is for a reason...they often bring up his "weakest D in the league" comment...yet they fail to mention that's the comment that made him lose the room and got him fired in Pitt...he might be "calculating"...but he calculate wrong a few times too...

They are not a fast team, Petrov and even Savage in their days were faster then 80% of this team.

To be fair, Julien wasn't identified as "the guy" before he won the cup.

Even when they were on their Streak, they were not that good, and their competition was not that great either. They got lucky against a couple of good teams and beat some poopty ones.

I'm not sure, I'd suspect the coach would say something.

Luck? Come on.

At this point, I'm uneasy with Therrien, but not quite ready to toss him in the furnace. It is interesting to note, however, that this discussion (and many previous discussions) is quick to lay the blame at the coach's feet, but there's never any concern about Gionta's role in this. Shouldn't the captain bear some responsibility for motivating his team (and creating a buffer between coach and players)?
