I think expectations were too high for this team. They started off well, without playing well, and now that sloppy play is coming back to haunt them. Great goaltending covers up mistakes and that isn't happening now. If there is a trade that makes sense, Nonis should do it but he doesn't need to make a blockbuster. Management has made a statement about it's core, so build around it and give the team time to mature. The Leafs don't have to make the playoffs this year and they're certainly not a player or two away from a serious run. Their weaknesses haven't changed much since the summer but based on the signing of Bozak and the emergence/potential of Kadri as a #2, they need to go after a top pair defenceman (and maybe a 2nd pair shutdown guy). It could look something like this (not sure about L or R, so excuse me if they're on the wrong side):
Phaneuf and Girardi (either as a UFA or trade)
Franson and ? (shutdown guy)
Rielly and Gleason/Gunner
Fraser (or Gardiner, if he isn't traded)
Maybe resign Kamorov if the price is right too. Then let's see how they do. I like Reims but if he isn't the #1, trade him in the off season and get something in return. Sign a back-up during free agency.
I know, before I get trashed on here, I'm not the GM. Just hate to see this team get beaten the same way night after night by attacking their D and giving up almost twice as many shots on a nightly basis. |

I think its high time that the coach and GM get on the same page with regard to the goaltending. There's no way that Bernier deserved the start tonight - and he did crap the bed completely - based on the reasoning seemingly used previously for not starting Reimer.
poor performance - you sit.
its also time for the accountability card to be played a little in public.... I don't want to hear from Mason Raymond or JVR after a game like that.
its time for the 7M$ captain to step into the limelight - it is time for the leaders to lead... that would include Kessel (in my opinion).

The truly sad thing is that they can't.
The core is really not the problem. I look at the core and see them doing their jobs as advertised.
Phaneuf is playing his best hockey in years, Kessel continues to produce points, and the top line looks good when Bozak is up there.
It's the secondary guys who aren't pulling their weight. Franson still blows defensively. Kadri has been a ghost 80% of the year. Ranger and Fraser are #6/7 at best and both have seen far too much ice this year.
Clarkson needs to show up, our "tough guys" are soft as warm butter, and Lupul needs to eat his Wheaties or something.
Too many part-timers in the supporting cast. |

probably not far off.... the question now becomes whether Nonis has enough leash to let them fall further behind the top teams OR whether Mr Hollywood wants to let him fail sufficiently so as to bring in his own guy.
what I don't get is how and why they seem to have gotten so far removed from last season's worth ethic and the physicality aspect. Yes I understand that Fraser hasn't been in the line-up and that he would add a component of that... but the fighters don't get into the game at anything approaching the same amount of significant minutes, and generally the urgency isn't there.
Now it didn't seem to be the case that the room was or is divided based on the 24/7 film footage... but you do have to wonder if there's a rift in the room of some kind...
the "personality" change just seems to drastic. |

A Burke team made the dance last year.
Year one of the Nonis era begins now. It hasn't gone well.

no he really wasn't ... just more impatient - which can at times be good.
but really none of Burke's FA signings panned out... he got lucky dealing Beauchemin back to Anaheim - otherwise his FAs were all overpriced or just crap.
his trades on the other hand were largely fantastic.... he's hoping Nonis has the balls to shake things up... you'd think he has to if this continues. |
