Yep, and that industry is selling to some peoples' need to construct an alternate reality to a situation to prevent facing the "real" reality. - mohel

Another thing the tin foil hat crowd fails to realize is the Conspiracy Theory industry in itself is a billion dollar industry....books, internet sites, movies...people spend money on that stuff and it's crazy. I remember I was infuriated when the conspiracy nut jobs got their hands in the Newton shooting and Boston Marathon bombing saying the parents of the kids were actors or the victims of the bombing were actors with prosthetics....made me embarrassed to be a human being. - UnnamedSource
One thing that confounds conspiracy theorists is that if you are one and assume everything is preplanned, then spontaneous behavior can not exist. Mutually exclusive events....
Just ask one to cite and example of free will and spontaneous behavior. They are unable to. |

Anyone read Paul Stewart's new blog? I asked him a question and here is his response.
I don't believe him for a second.
Paul, am I reading more into this comment you made "Referees have to try to make things as fair as possible."?
- powerenforcer
Yes.
Are you saying the Refs had to "fix" things so games came out closer than they were?
- powerenforcer
No. - powerenforcer
How does your second question relate to your first?
Making things fair IS NOT the same thing as evening things up.
Let it go already.

To bring it back to hockey... some might believe that a certain team is clearly the best in the league. They may also NEED to think this is so, to the point that the only explanation for a loss is that the fix was in. Better to construct a "this league is crooked" alternate reality than face the possibility that said certain team cannot win every game. To have a need to make such a complex alternate reality speaks to the level of NEED to keep the original belief as true. |

So you're saying that the conspiracy theorists are conspiring to sell the Ameican people on the reality of conspiracies?
Makes sense to me

Correct...if the NHL was fixed the Kings vs The Devils in the Stanley Cup would've never happened.....and now that the Hawks are in the West and proven to be a ratings juggernaut (I've always wanted to use that word) they would win the WC every year...... |

Are we the kinder and gentler Blackhawks blog now? What is the point of being a Chicago sports fan if you can't be surly and bitter? |

What they can't handle is the randomness of the event: a cypher like Oswald kills JFK, a minor low-life like a Ruby kills Oswald, a schizophrenic like Chapman kills Lennon to impress Jody Foster, a non-entity like Ray assassinates Dr. King, a great team like the Blackhawks actually loses a game or two....
There has to be more to it than that - a grand conspiracy to justify it.
Not that I'm equated the loss of a hockey game to the loss of JFK or Dr. King, although it seems like it here sometime. |

What's funny is that it would depend on what the person's alternate reality is based on. If it is money-centered, maybe an LA v. NY finals is preferred for ratings? But also an Original Six dynasty would be good for ratings, too.... Both of these would point to the conspiracy favoring the Hawks, though, so we need a new one. How about the one where Bettman has his favorites who really pull the strings? In that one, the Hawks are hated by the hockey establishment. Ding ding ding....
juggernaut is a great word, btw! |
