Check Chicago's record before Toews and Kane. They were just as bad as Buffalo. That is how you get better. Look at Rick Nash. It was his dream to play in Columbus and he left.

he was traded and columbus was a total mess who wouldnt want to get out of there

every owner wants a cup, the sabres still have a cap maybe not internal but every team is governed by a salary cap so it doesnt matter how much he is worth

when you call your team hockey heaven and say you will win or at least challenge for a cup within 3 years of when he took over its probably time to put your money where your mouth is and show to be competitive rather than being the worst team in the league competing with the oilers for the #1 overall draft pick

so unless the sabres somehow are able to show that they are going to compete and make the playoffs before kane hits the market (if he does) then any real talk about him going "home" is just a daydream imo because typically players wont go "home" unless they are competing going from a team that they have won and can continue to win (unless they are getting close to retirement)

Mr Pegula's mistake was being too big a fan . He is slowly realizing what mistakes were made in who he had faith in. Corrections are being made. While they may be a cap on players , there is no budget on how much he can spend on everything else . And Mr Pegula is not sparing the money of other things hockey related . Pretty impressive stuff going on around the Sabres organization as far as facilities and other hockey related infrastructure.

They weren't good when he was there. Has Columbus ever won a playoff GAME yet? Let alone a series?

As a devil fan, would you rather be in the Sabres shoes right now? Tell the truth. Just asking.
- jerryl1964

nope id rather be a devils fan no matter what, sure the sabres future looks good IF the prospects all pan out but the devils have iced i competitive team for over 2 decades and have a management team that know what they are doing even if the forfeit of the pick is questionable (even though it was a very questionable penalty due to similar contracts and the arbitrator saying he felt that no punishment should come)

Buffalo is terrible. Chicago is a winner. Chicago has a great blend of young depth talent along with the superstars. Buffalo has no GM a retred coach and and owner who has no idea what direction to go. Yeah why would he not want to go to Buffalo.

- blacksheep1

Hilarious statements from a fan of a team that has a grand total of 2 winning seasons and has made the playoffs, what, once in their entire existence? I wouldn't throw stones being that you're a fan of a perennially losing team.

You know nothing about our owner, so don't pretend to. What has yours done?

This "retread" coach has a team full of 3rd liners playing above and beyond their skill set, like Nolan always seems to do every time he coaches in the league.

I wasn't asking you to change teams, but who's situation would you rather be in? I could see the Devils being in a similar situation as the Sabres very soon.

Parise is the rare exception and you know it.

Like I said it is a big if he hits the open market and he's already done it all career wise. I'm just saying IF he is a UFA then Buffalo has a good shot at signing him. Lets see where Vanek ends up next summer if not sooner. David Clarkson went home to Toronto. Of course it doesn't happen with every player but Kane lives here in the off season, his parents are here so why not want to play for your hometown team to finish your career.

the devils D seems to be pretty set with greene (very underrated), larsson, gelinas and merrill with severson (who could be the best of the lot) and santini in a couple seasons

schneider in net

the only questions is upfront so that will be interesting

Don't forget Buffalo could have 2 top picks on the team by the time this all happens. Things will be a lot different in 19 months.

Ummm it absolutely does. Deeper pockets means more scouts, coaches, player development etc. it doesn't do anything for cap purposes...but behind the scenes it helps a lot.

I'm sure they will try there best to sign Moulson, but why would he sign in Buf who will not be a contender for 5 years.
- Champ

You know, not all players have the same mindset. Not every player needs to play for a contender at the age of 30.

nice to see Im talking to a real fan

I've never said anything about money in any of my posts have I? All I'm saying is that banking on a definite maybe 2 seasons from now is not smart.

It's just simple optimism. The man wants to win more than anything. Not that you mentioned it, but that whole "fanboy" crap is bologna. The man signs checks. That's it. His philosophy was to give everyone a clean slate. Everyone. Even Regier.

Optimism I get. Someone else was passing it off as the best plan going forward. I was just trying to be the voice of reason having watched my home team fail to land the players who grew up Hab fans for my whole life.

That whole Kane to Buffalo and Crosby to Habs and Parise to Wild so on and so forth.. there's no real point in discussing it. Yes, it COULD happen. Sure. Will it? Statistically not likely. But..Parise and Suter did it. I wouldn't discount it. In Patty Kane's case..hey..maybe..just maybe.. he says "hey, I want to jumpstart Buffalo's rebuild! Win a cup in my home town!" Obviously unlikely but I don't think he'd not join our team for the sole reason of Buffalo currently being bad.

2012 1st rounder (#21) for Paul Gaustad, 2013 4th rounder (#99)

Nashville got Juuse Saros out of that trade. The Finnish stud goalie who just won the WJC. Basically Girgensons for Gaustad and Saros.... Pretty even trade now.
