If all they get are 2 1sts for Moulson and Miller, Lafontaine needs to quit.

I still maintain Regier should have been left in charge of the fire sale but told he is not allowed to negotiate contracts.

- muffin_man

They are not going to get more than Iginla got. 1st and some prospects which are guaranteed NHLers.

Now who is interested in Miller as a rental. STL, PITT, ANA, WSH maybe. Will they overpay for a rental. Miller will hand pick the team he will play for next year. Just saying, it's tough. Brodeur will be available for less.

I agree, if I'm Buffalo I make an honest effort to sign Moulson, 30 goal scorers aren't easy to come by. I don't care that he scores ugly goals as long as he scores. Ott is valuable but to much is being expected of him, he is not a top 6 guy.
At some point we have to have some capable vets on this team, it can't be all prospects and draft choices. It's time they get a GM in here and start getting all these question marks straightened out.

I'm sure they will try there best to sign Moulson, but why would he sign in Buf who will not be a contender for 5 years.

They'd have to over-pay to keep Moulson. Wouldn't be good for the team or player. I would imagine Moulson is getting to point where he'll sacrifice a little money to win.

If he was told that, there's a very strong chance he said no thank you and then they fired him.

What GM would be ok with having part of their power removed?

Why waste any money on the current players who will not be here when the Sabres become a contender again? Don't forget in 19 months Pat Kane becomes a free agent. Save the money for him and the Sabres become a contender in 2 years.

2014- Top 2 pick
2015- Top 2 pick, maybe Connor McDavid
2015- Sign Pat Kane to the max contract

2015 Sabres are respectable again.

2016 all the young talent starts to gel....Who knows?

I could see the Sabres resigning Ryan Miller. If the plan goes through he could be here when the Sabres turn it around.

Bottom line, don't waste any money. If we get Kane, this will be a free agent destination.

It's not the way things usually go but Pat needs to convince Terry to crap the bed next year as well. This could only be done without Miller. Reinhart is good but the Sabres aim needs to be on McDavid along with some big UFA signings in 2015. Like you said Kane is one of those big signings.

This year, if they keep Miller, draft a top 3 and sign a couple good UFA's. The Sabres have a really scary chance of mimicking the Bills' last 10-15 years. The years of being a competitive team are overplayed and stale. The Sabres need to focus on becoming a championship team. This could be done in 2015. 2014 is going to have to be another year of enduring.

1. May get more money to stay here
2. Close to home (yes, TO is closer but doubt they will have the room for him or even want him)
3. He says he likes it here (true or not who knows) but we'll take his word for it

5 years? I say 3...lets not forget free agency as Pegula isn't afraid to spend. Lets just hope LaFontaine and his new GM are smarter then Darcy was.

If the Sabres intend to continue with that objective in mind then they trade Miller as I don't see him wanting to be part of it. Miller is good but this year was the Olympic year and I think that was/is his focus from day one. Once the Olympics are over the cup becomes his next objective. He won't be here to see the rebuild take place JMO

OBVIOUSLY the situation is better in Chicago, but the only difference they can make is an extra year. That doesn't mean a complete lock ruling out anything else ever.

Agree with your first sentence, which conflict with your earlier post. Teams way over pay at deadline and in FA... So it is likely the Sabres will get more for each, just look at the trades for Goose, Pommer and Vanek (although Vanek wasn't at either of those times). So, I do believe each will have good value at the deadline. If they don't for some reason, then I am just as happy to sign both, both who have stated publicly that they like it here in Buffalo...and with all the picks and young prospects the rebuild doesn't need to take 3 years...keep some key veterans, acquire a couple more for short term (ie Briere) to mentor and bridge the development gap and in 2 years can be battling Toronto and Canadians for a playoff spot.
That said, I wouldn't mind seeing if the Sabres can get McDavide next year..so sucking for another year is fine...then turn up the heat on the rebuild!

- IonSabres

My only "earlier statement" was that Briere sucks and I want him off the Habs...

Rebuilds don't speed up just because you have extra draft picks. Unless you get top 3 picks, they usually take a few years to develop into anything.

Option 1) play for a cup contender for the rest of your career, alongside Jonathan Toews.
Option 2) Play in the pressure packed situation of your own home town with 1 less year on your contract and no guarantee the team will be any good before you die of old age

Your are right......The extra year. That is the difference. My question is why wouldn't Kane come home and win the Sabres a cup? It isn't as far fetched as anyone thinks.

why would either of them?

But sure, lets bank the whole rebuild on the idea of Kane coming home. Worked out great for the Habs with Briere last time, Lecavalier every time, Brodeur, etc. This idea only works with people on their last legs eg: Briere this time, Lindros/Allison to Toronto

Buffalo has about as much of chance to sign Kane as the jackets do, which is ZERO!

Only time will tell. I am just hopeful the Sabres truly bottom out and build a Stanley Cup champ the way it is done now. Pick high. Do you really think the Leafs are ever going to win the cup? They missed the playoffs for 9 straight years, never got a high pick and now are signing Dion Phaneuf to a 49 million dollar contract. Phil Kessel? Really?
I will take the pain now and hope It works out. It could be a dream that Kane comes here, but if he does, the Sabres will be golden for 10 years. We now have an owner that will do anything to get him here. So you never know.

Pat Kane is from Buffalo which is a hockey town. So there is a chance he could sign here. Columbus is not a hockey town, so you are right he will not be signing there.

by 2015 kane could have won 4 cups. he has two now, plus uncle terry is the only one capable of paying bonus money doubling any money some other team could give him.
