I agree with the last part but the reason the trades aren't similar is that Vanek is a rental. There was no extension in place. Also, they gave up Moulson who was an effective W with Tavares so they gave up a 1st and a second for a season's worth of a slight upgrade

Howson was about to be fired so I dont think he was able to accept any trades, but Columbus is an idiot, with all their current picks plus all of the islanders, they could have packaged picks together and moved up their other picks a few times and gotten their 31st and 34th picks turned into late 1st rounders

(Maatta, Laughton, Schmaltz, M Subban, Matteau, Pearson) all taken from 20th on

Kessel and JVR instantly make the Isles better than just having Tavares. Both signed long term, one to a team friendly contract. I think that's fair value.
