With where the Habs are in the standings and how they are playing recently, would you rather a Pacs+DD+2nd for Kane+Byfuglien type of move starting what I assume would be a pretty massive overhaul of current lineup, or would you rather small moves to see if they can't make a run this year?
Nevermind that MB is far more likely to be of second camp and the unlikelihood of first scenario, I'm just asking what you, as fans, would prefer? |

Far from being a Briere fan but he seems to get to the front an awful lot for a small guy. Puck simply rarely makes it there when playing with Moen and White and Parros. - kev1586
He needs guys who win puck battles for him and put the puck on net, shockingly he did well with Plek and Gio. 2 of his goals were the result of Murray winning puck battles along the boards.
Eller needs a kick in the ass..he isn't generating much, plays mostly a parameter game, you can see he really misses playing with Gallagher. |

Jets would NEVER do this...they would get way more moving those 2 guys separately. |

That is not nearly enough for those 2.
I also don't get your post since making that move would put is much further along towards competing this year... |

Everyone on this roster who plays with Gallagher becomes more productive because he's the only player on this roster who plays like that.
Guys on roster who play like what you just described for Eller: Eller, Bourque, Plekanec, Desharnais, Pacioretty (often), Galchenyuk (often). Too many similar players is what kills this team on many nights. |

Agreed with first point which is why I said that TYPE of move (help up front in a diff type of player; see last post) + help on blue.
While your second point might be true, it could also create a scenario where Habs could get a legitimate window of contention in the near-future? |

That would be accurate if this team was a player or two from becoming legitimate contenders. Unfortunately, they are not. I am quite comfortable with Bergevin's approach to developing players as opposed to selling the farm and depleting the prospect pool. While there are some interesting pieces ready, they are only on d. We will have to wait 2 or 3 years before we know what the forward prospects will become. |

We would be in a much better spot right away and for the next 10 years with Kane over Pacioretty. Not to mention Buff might re-sign
Kane - Plekanec - Briere/UFA
Galchenyuk - Eller - Gallagher
Bourque - Briere/shutdown guy - Bournival - this line makes me sad
Prust - White - Moen
Parros
PK - Emelin
Buff - Diaz
Gorges - Tinordi
Edit: I just spent way too much time thinking about something that would never happen... |

The main problem with this team is defense. Let's see if MB can overall this D in the summer but I expect minor moves and rookies to jump in. Habs are not close to become contenders, too many holes to fill. They also need to get bigger up front, who will replace Gio in the top 6? |

He's a third liner now. This wouldn't change the question.
Pacioretty - DD - Gallagher
Galchenyuk - Eller - Prust
Bourque - Plekanec - Gionta

I have a problem with maintaining the status quo forever in the hopes that some prospect will develop into Gretzky. Yes, Galchenyuk will continue to improve and hopefully become a PPG player. Eller may develop into a 60 point player and take over for Plekanec. Gallagher will continue to be gallagher. Nothing else is going to change except Tinordi and Beaulieu will slowly creep in.
Do you want to watch this same team next year? |

at $3M he's fine. plays a 2-way game. Can sub into the top 6 if needed.
Like Briere though, he's not what the team needs. |

Edmonton as a ufa.
that was my projection for next year if we did the trade you suggested. |

I'd love Matt Moulson to replace Gio to play with Plek.
Prust has no offense, he is a 3rd liner at best. |

If Markov is allowed to walk as ufa, MB should be fired on the spot. |

Prust should be a 4th liner. He's playing a Dave Semenko role right now.
Moulson is Ryder 2.0 |

As long as this team ice 3-4 midgets in the top 9, they will get pushed around easily. Small guys with heart are great but 1....maybe 2 are enough. Gio has to go IMO, time to get bigger slowly and he is the first one to go. |

If Bergevin thinks this team has what it takes to make a run at it now, then get trade Eller and go get a big winger for Plekanec and trade Beaulieu for help on blue line now:
Pacioretty-Desharnais-Gallagher
Winger-Plekanec-Gionta
Galchenyuk-Briere-Prust
Bourque(who can fill in)-White-Moen
Bournival
PK-Markov
Gorges-D
Emelin-Diaz
Murray-Bouillon(fill in based on opponent and injuries and play of 5-6)
I personally don't think this is good enough and would rather get max value out of guys like Gionta Markov now to open up a real contender in a few years, but that's me. |
