What they don't say is that it was a risky play. Gionta was replacing a D and pinching like that, if he missed the puck, would have opened up the play for a 2 vs. 1 for the sens

what I saw was that he got pushed on Anderson, and he got pummeled by him and Conacher while trying to get up
