The market is such that I guess they had to sign him to that contract. Situation is similar to what we had to pay for Streit. I just think the term and money is nuts. He's not Shea Weber, Drew Doughty or Duncan Keith.
- Hextall271

Well, that's the problem. The elite guys aren't available, and the next level guys are still fairly rare. Phaneuf knew what he could get, and Toronto either had to pay up or lose him with no one to replace him. In the end, they really had no choice. It's similar to the Flyers paying Timonen what they did in 2007.

Dino Ciccarelli would have played.
Dino Ciccarelli is a man.
Therefore, all men would play.
Therefore, Matt Read is not a man.

Just trying to put some Hockeybuzz logic out there.

I am glad though because it means he will be sucking for the Leafs for years.

With the salary cap going up it won't be long before that hit looks like a deal. They also left trading him as an option.

It looks like a pretty good deal to me.

I saw the video.

The Russian kid was a Richard for skating past the US bench like that and deserved that stick he took to the face.

definitely. you know if they could, the flyers would have tripped over themselves to offer him that same exact deal. (along with a ton of other teams) it is what it is. the market is awful so bad deals are the norm. there is no "winning" a free agent signing anymore. the paul martin contract, which was a certifiable albatross 2 years ago, will actually be pretty damn reasonable by its conclusion.

granted, martin has drastically improved his play, but its also just a reflection on the rising cap and such a thin pool of availability combining to make awful deals the norm

Obviously I should have just quashed and not engaged. This is a capitalist site and therefore will quash political discussion in the interest of not driving away the eyeballs here to talk hockey.

Stop with the political discussion before your political ideas (at either extreme or moderate positions) discredit your hockey opinions in the eyes of other posters.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that Matt Read will be on IR by tomorrow.

I don't trust anything that comes out of the Flyers, wrt injury reports.

Maybe that's what the issue is..he cap rising. To me he seems like a 4-5 mil guy not a near max contract for 7 years..

It could be because he comes off as a douche.

This makes me feel slightly better that the Flyers aren't the only ones that do this.

He is. But the problem is that, when the Matt Carle's of the world are getting $5.5M in UFA, Dion Phaneuf is going to want (and get) $7M in UFA. So Toronto either had to pony up the money or lose their top defenseman.

Again, they still never fixed the issue of protecting owners from themselves.

i dont know what it is. it seems to be getting worse and worse throughout all of sports. but hockey still seems to be the worst. especially since everything is either UBI or LBI. like what the hell. its like having a cable guy assess an injury.

uhhhh yeah well it could be anything from a broken eyelash to a missing heart.... yeah. UBI!

Read missed a game earlier in the season with an upper body injury. No one knew what the injury was or when he would return. No one knows if both injuries are related. We just know Read is hurt and can't play tonight.

Well in my opinion with the Cap going up Toronto actually got a deal. I could see Phanuef getting much closer to 8.5 million on the open market. But at the same time, Toronto did have a choice. They have deep defense. Do you not think the Flyers would have traded Coburn and a 1st for Phanuef? Then they would let Gardiner, and Reiley develop.

exactly. like okay. phaneuf isnt near keith or weber. but he is 1.5 million better than carle? absolutely. its just the way the deals are now. the scale is nonexistent

I think it's fair market value. I bet several teams would have paid that amount.
