I DID watch the whole game. What's your point? The man's an idiot. Everybody knows that D to D pass is coming. He's been doing it for years, regardless of the circumstances. How many times has he sandbagged his partner by feeding him a puck when he was already covered, instead of, I don't know, skating it up?

Mez has hardly played this season, and somehow he's the worst D man, while Coburn and Streit are giving the puck away like it's made of plutonium.

Coburn makes a bad turnover once each of the last 2 games but makes countless defensive breakups and he's terrible. Meszaros loses easy coverage on 2 goals and has unfairly criticized...got it.

No, Coburn has made one bad mistake in each of the last 2 games, but is your best defenseman the rest of the way through, Mez, Schenn & Streit have blown defensive coverages, and I've noticed Streit taking ill advised pinches in the offensive zone more often, it did lead to a goal last night, but also created a few 2 on 1 breaks the other way, (as Mez also did).
If you want Coburn to sit, then your asking Kimmo to do more then he's capable of doing.
That's why I asked if you watched the whole game, yes, they were dumb moves by Coburn, but where's your better D man to replace him? & have you noticed the work he puts in during the rest of the game?

How many of their 18 year old basketball and football players do they tout on tsn? They don't have a big football league like the NFL and only have 1 Canadian team in the NBA and ml which gives them more room for young players in their most popular sport.
- jmatchett383

I can't even follow that logic. I have no idea how you're getting any where you're going. You think when they talk about the NBA on their national broadcasts on TSN and Rogers they just talk about the Raptors? Is that what you think? On their MLB coverage consists of just what the Jays did that day? So not covering the rest of the teams in the sports leagues gives them more time to talk about Canadian kids advancing in MLB, NBA, NFL and the NHL?

Because that's what it sounds like you're saying and that makes absolutely no sense at all. If you've ever watched their Sportscentres you'd see they cover a more international and wider variety of sports than any US sports programing.

Coburn has definitely been the Flyers' best defender this season. And he's a solid 3rd d-man on any team. And he's made 2 really bad passes the last 2 games, but he also almost certainly saved a goal on the 3rd Nucks PP last night.

Are people just giving plutonium away? Didn't realize this was a thing. I think Streits game has improved drastically since the start of the season. Again, its all bout expectations. Temper your expectations and you wont de disapointed.

Most D make D-2-D passes. Its one of the first things your supposed to do. It is meant to open up the ice as players converge on the puck carrier.

He's also playing more minutes then he should.
I would be happy if we could find another guy like him, at least.

I'm arguing they have fewer pro teams to.cover which leads to more room for junior players. Didn't mean to confuse you so.

Edit: They cover all teams, but focus on the Canadian-based ones. They cover the Blue Jays offseason extensively on TSN without a peep about other MLB teams except for big moves.

Two games in a row Coburn does the exact same thing in front of his own net, and people are talking about how bad Mezsaros is? Coburn is just flat out stupid. The D to D pass is his only play. He'd be better off icing the puck. How is he allowed to have another shift after that? How much longer does his contract run?
- element_104

Considering he's been their best defenseman for most of the season, it's easier to excuse Coburn having a couple bad games. Meszaros has been awful. The Flyers have been trying to trade Meszaros for months, nobody wants him. If they actually thought somebody'd claim him, they'd probably be overjoyed to waive him and get the contract off the books.

And with Mez having one year left & impending UFA status makes it more telling how difficult it is to unload him.

Please read my edit. I didn't mean 0 coverage, but major focus. Can't remember the last time the Cubs were on the TSN frontpage.
On the other hand, the US media hypes up college football players as much as Canada does the CHL players.

Bill said last night on twitter that he's likely headed for the KHL. I'd be amazed if he lands a NHL gig.

There's a nationalist bias in their coverage and coverage of Canadian based teams is reflective of that but so also is their coverage of Canadian born players. They promote them more than the US does. It's more of the little sister to the North thing.

If the original question is "Why do were know Canadian prospects more than US prospects?" It's because Canadian media promotes their athletes more. They do that because they choose to, not because they have less to cover.

It'd be a smart career move for Mez to go to the KHL, given how far his game has fallen off here.

He'll make some tax free dollars out of the NHL glare and if he gets his game right, someone will come knocking for a player that with his skill set.

When US covers college players, they don't care where they were born just how much talent they have.

I mentioned it earlier, but I do think it's more about US media cynicism than it is about anything else.

US media folks just don't think it's cool to be perceived as a "flag waver".

Unless, they are covering the Olympics. Then, they'll wave away.

Well I don't watch TSN Sports Center, just read TSN. The lead story, given a choice between the Penguins/Blackhawks and Senators/Flames will always be Senators vs. Flames. Because they push the Canadian coverage a lot.

I wasn't trying to say they don't care about the other 112 teams in the 4 majors. Just that they push the Canadian teams and the CFL, and kind of gloss over the rest. It's what I've observed over years strictly by reading TSN. So if I'm uninformed, I apologize.

I've held on as long as I can. I did. Because Lord knows I've stated my thoughts on Meszaros.

But that quote is the most accurate statement I could possibly imagine about Meszaros -- he's no longer an NHL defenseman. The Flyers will dress him, and I know why, and certainly, there's no way to fault them for a 27/28-year-old first-round pick to just be this...bad.

But he's a KHL-caliber defenseman now. It's unfortunate that the Flyers don't have many options other than to carry him on the roster and play him from time to time.

Giveaways per 60 minutes:

Meszaros: 2.81
Gustafsson: 2.13
Grossmann: 1.93
Coburn: 1.75
Timonen: 1.39
L. Schenn: 1.23
Streit: 1.22

It's science.

Perhaps I'm not understanding the nuance of this debate, but I'm going to have to disagree with the bold above... Canada has a population smaller than the state of California, so it stands to reason they have much less to cover.

They don't have a Tim Tebow either.

So it stands to reason they have much, much less to cover.
