And I think that's it. People watch professional sports to watch the very best compete at what they do. Most of women's sports, as tough as it sounds, is pretty much an inferior product to men's sports. I know, I know, I've heard people argue about how women's basketball for instance, can be more fundamentally sound, but the fact is, the men's games are full of bigger, stronger, faster, and just about everything else more athletic. I have to remember where I read this, because it was a long time ago, but in the months leading up to the 1998 Women's World Cup of Soccer, the US Women's team (which won the gold medal that year) played a boys high school soccer team in California, I believe, and they got trounced. We're talking about boys, still growing up, whose bodies are still developing, getting the better of full-grown adult women. That's an example about how far the gap is. I'm all for women competing, but to sell it as a product will rarely work, simply because, for the most part, they're just not the best at what they do. There are a few exceptions (for instance, the Chinese girl who broke the men's record in the breaststroke in the Olympics in London), but they are few and far between.

the only time i watch women's sports is during the olympics.. and even that i really can only watch a few of the sports. My wife will put on the NCAA womens tournament, when i see scores like 98-56 in the elite 8 or lower you know there is something wrong with the quality.

In highschool the girls varsity team in basketball was undefeated, and the mens was about 3-10.. The girls were bragging so much about how they were better we challenged them to a quick 3 on 3. they picked their top 3 players we picked 3 bench warmers and played with a girls ball. when the score got to be 8-0 (going by 1) they stopped trying and got mad.. but it shut them up.

Phaneuf would have got more on the open market. If the Leafs wanted to be competitive anytime within the next 3-4 years while Reilly matured and Gardiner developed they needed to resign him. As much as I like guys like Myers, as of today Phanuef would be our best defensemen.
